About Smith Management
Smith Management is a privately held family office with an active construction and development platform spanning 24 states. We operate with an owner-operator mindset: lean, decisive, and hands-on — pursuing ground-up development, value-add repositioning, utility and infrastructure work, and complex entitlement assignments across a diverse and growing portfolio.
Role Overview
This is a high-exposure, high-accountability role for a driven professional looking to build a substantive career in real estate development and construction. As a Construction & Development Analyst, you will serve as a direct support to the Director of Construction & Development — coordinating projects, conducting analytical work, managing various Capex projects, and progressively taking ownership of independent assignments as your capabilities expand.
The role is intentionally broad by design. You will be exposed to the full project lifecycle across multiple asset classes, from initial site evaluation and highest-and-best-use analysis through entitlement, ground-up construction, and stabilization. Across all this work, you will interface with various internal departments including asset management, acquisitions, and finance to support cross-functional project needs.
Core Responsibilities:
Development
- Support the underwriting and feasibility analysis of development opportunities across various asset classes (i.e. Small Bay, Manufactured Housing, Townhomes, etc.)
- Conduct highest-and-best-use analyses to identify optimal disposition or development strategies for excess and underutilized land
- Assist in the coordination and execution of rezoning applications and entitlement processes, including engagement with municipalities, planners, and legal counsel
- Track project milestones, timelines, and deliverables across active development assignments
Construction & Capital Projects
- Support the day-to-day management of active construction projects including ground-up builds, redevelopments, and utility and infrastructure upgrades
- Support Capex planning, budget tracking, and draw management across portfolio projects, including assets held within our Scrap Metal vertical
- Coordinate with third-party engineers, contractors, and consultants to ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget
- Support grant-funded project administration, including documentation, compliance tracking, and reporting requirements
- Conduct regular site visits with your direct report (monthly travel expected) to assess progress and report findings
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree (any discipline; real estate, construction management, finance, or engineering preferred)
- 0–3 years of experience in real estate development, construction, asset management, or a related field; real estate background required
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
- Comfortable traveling to job sites on a monthly basis
Preferred
- Familiarity with Smartsheet or similar project management platforms
- Interest / Exposure to entitlement, permitting, or municipal approval processes
- Working knowledge of construction documents, project budgets, or draw schedules
- Interest in value-add real estate, adaptive reuse, or land development
What This Role Offers
This position provides a rare opportunity for an early-career professional to gain hands-on exposure to a sophisticated, multi-state real estate platform. You will work directly alongside senior leadership on complex, non-cookie-cutter projects — including ground-up construction across multiple asset classes, creative land repositioning strategies, and value-add scenarios that require outside-the-box thinking. The trajectory for the right candidate is toward full project ownership and leadership responsibility.
- Direct mentorship and daily exposure to the Director of Construction & Development
- Active involvement in projects across 24 states
- Engagement across the full development lifecycle — from raw land to stabilized asset
- Entrepreneurial, high-trust environment with real accountability and real upside
Location: New York / New Jersey Metro — 4 days in office, 1 day remote
Experience: Entry-level to 3 years; real estate background required
Education: Bachelor’s degree required
