A day in the life…

Wondering what a day in the life of a Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant at The Iowa Clinic might look like?

  • Arrive at work in the morning – no night shifts here!
  • Collects, processes and stores patient samples as per protocol and safety guidelines.
  • Performs patient testing within specified timelines.
  • Maintains a clean, safe work environment.
  • Potential to move up to helping maintain the equipment, ensuring that calibration and maintenance are completed with appropriate time frames.

Qualifications

  • A desire to find a meaningful, fulfilling career
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One year laboratory experience
  • Demonstrates ability to consistently meet work schedule demands in the clinic.
  • Obtains adequate blood specimens from patients using appropriate specimen collection and handling procedures.
  • Labels all specimens in accordance with clinical laboratory standards and Clinic policies and procedures
  • Prepares specimens for delivery or delivers to appropriate laboratory areas.
  • Within scope of training, performs laboratory testing utilizing laboratory equipment in accordance with Clinic policies/procedures and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Performs computer functions to support collection and processing of specimens.
  • Maintains awareness of own safety in carrying out duties and responsibilities. Adheres to universal precautions and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Assumes accountability for enhancing own knowledge through workshops, in-services, etc.
