PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Diesel Mechanic Apprentice performs the completion of preventative and scheduled maintenance on locomotives in a fast‑paced, safety‑focused environment. Working alongside qualified mechanics, the apprentice will complete inspections, repairs, and servicing while developing core technical skills related to diesel engines and mechanical systems.
This role is ideal for individuals who are mechanically inclined, eager to learn, and committed to working safely and efficiently. All work must be performed in accordance with company policies, safety procedures, and applicable regulatory standards.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Maintain, inspect, service, test and repairs all systems on locomotives, mobile equipment and vehicles used in plant, yard and road service
- Diagnose diesel engine malfunctions and make repairs within regulatory and company guidelines
- Complete work in accordance with blueprints, schematic drawings and service manuals
- Evaluate of parts for reuse, repair or replacement
- Modify and construct mechanical assemblies
- Maintain of low voltage repairs on locomotive electrical systems
- Service locomotive cabs which include cleaning cab walls, locomotive toilets, windows and floors
- Operate equipment such as overhead or mobile cranes, forklifts and hand tools
- High school diploma or general equivalency
- Valid driver’s license
- Minimum 3 years’ working as a mechanic preferably on diesel engines
- Available to work all types of shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays in all weather conditions
- Ability to pass the required written examinations, read and understand safety instructions, rules, regulations and other written or printed material in English
- Validated dedication to safety and ability to complete work within guidelines/rules
- Strong communication skills (provide clear and concise instructions/directions)
