Student Speed Advisory Assistant

The position includes in office and field work during regular business hours. Some weekend and evening work is required to support special events and public meetings.
Responsibilities
- Works with the Traffic Technologist to identify streets for traffic calming and data collection. Sets up the speed advisory unit on the boulevard of city roadways. Monitors and records vehicle speeds.
- Inputs data from speed advisory studies into database and ensures accuracy.
- Responds to public enquiries about traffic data collection and traffic calming.
- Assists staff with placement of automatic data recorders (to collect traffic speed and volume) on city roadways.
- Works with Traffic Technologist (daily) and Manager of Transportation Safety and Policy (weekly) to monitor work progress.
- Daily contact with the public to answer general traffic inquiries.
- Prepare letters and surveys to the public.
- Provides support for some public meetings and special events on weekends and evenings as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Minimum equivalent to partial secondary school education.
- Minimum 1 month of related experience.
- Enrolled in secondary or post secondary school and returning to school in the next semester.
- Valid MTO G2 class driver’s license in good standing and access to reliable personal transportation for the full duration of employment to travel to various locations across the City
- Strong customer service skills.
- Willing to work in a team environment.
- Comfortability with data collection and input.
- Possesses strong communication skills both written and oral.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Some knowledge of municipal transportation, planning and engineering fields is considered an asset.
- Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
