A Glimpse of the Job
The Assistant Director assists the Director in all aspects of departmental operations and maintains responsibility for Operations.
Essential Duties/Tasks
- Operations Management - Serves as the primary building manager for Campus Living & Learning (CL&L) facilities, overseeing daily operations and ensuring a high-quality residential experience for approximately 1,600 students. Manages housing operations including assignments, billing adjustments, and urgent facility or resident concerns. Coordinates and oversees non-academic facility operations such as summer turn, cleaning, and renovation schedules. Manages third-party vendor relationships and contracts to ensure effective service delivery. Reviews departmental accounts payable and receivable processes for accuracy and alignment with institutional goals, and provides budgetary recommendations. Acts as a subject matter expert for housing systems (e.g., StarRez, Onity, Ving/VisiOnline), including oversight of reporting processes and training for professional staff. Serves in an on-call rotation (1–2 weekends per month) and responds to campus emergencies as needed.
- Supervision & Staff Development - Provides direct supervision and leadership for a Housing Coordinator (SDS2), Housing Operations Coordinator, up to 24 Community Leaders (CLs), and 4–5 student office staff. Oversees all aspects of staff management including recruitment, selection, training, development, scheduling, and performance evaluation. Ensures compliance with departmental and university policies within the CL program. Provides ongoing coaching, feedback, and support to staff to promote professional growth, accountability, and effective team performance.
- Communications & Marketing - Oversees the development and maintenance of CL&L communications, including website content, publications (e.g., handbooks, resident communication resources), and digital messaging. Manages communication strategies within the housing management system (StarRez) and collaborates on social media efforts to ensure consistent, accurate, and engaging messaging to residents and campus stakeholders.
- Programs & Special Events - Advises and supports student programming efforts, including participation in major campus events such as New Student Conferences, Welcome Week, and other departmental initiatives. Contributes to the planning and facilitation of leadership workshops, orientations, and community-building programs. Oversees scheduling and management of internal reservable CL&L spaces, including contract processing and invoicing.
- Conduct & Adjudication - Serves as a hearing officer for student conduct cases, ensuring fair and consistent application of university policies. Communicates expectations and policies to residents and staff to promote accountability and community standards.
- Other Duties as Assigned - Performs additional responsibilities in support of departmental and institutional priorities.

Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Six years of progressively responsible experience in higher education.
- Master’s Degree.
- Experience working in University Housing
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of StarRez, Onity, Ving/VisiOnline.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- This position is security sensitive
