As an HVAC Controls Project Manager, you will serve as the on-site technical and project leader for assigned HVAC and Building Automation projects. You will guide work from kickoff through commissioning and closeout, coordinate the people and materials needed to deliver results, and keep customers informed throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, execution, and completion of control systems projects for assigned customers.
  • Design system hardware, develop control programming, and coordinate installation activities.
  • Direct system and network commissioning, validation, and project closeout.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance to subcontractors, technicians, designers, and installers.
  • Act as the primary customer contact and maintain clear, proactive communication throughout the project.
  • Manage project costs, billings, collections, revenue, and margin performance.
  • Identify change orders, scope growth opportunities, and contract impacts.
  • Ensure work meets applicable state, local, and federal requirements.
  • Develop as-built documentation, commissioning records, training materials, and operation manuals.
  • Train owners and operators on system operation and support a successful handover.

How You Will Do It

  • Own outcomes with accountability, safety, and integrity by keeping project execution aligned with customer expectations, quality standards, and code requirements.
  • Stay close to the work and remove obstacles early by coordinating directly with field teams, vendors, and customers to prevent delays and rework.
  • Improve every day through candid communication and practical problem-solving by reviewing scope, schedule, commissioning, and cost impacts as conditions change.
  • Win as one team by building trust across internal partners, subcontractors, consultants, and customers and sharing clear updates throughout the project.
  • Use established standards to design and program HVAC control systems and verify complete system functionality.
  • Lead controller loading, device verification, and commissioning activities to confirm performance before turnover.
  • Coordinate field device and panel installation so work matches the approved design and project requirements.
  • Track project revenue, costs, and margins, and provide regular status updates to management.
  • Manage procurement by selecting materials, securing vendor pricing, and monitoring delivery schedules.
  • Coach technicians, designers, installers, and subcontractors so work is completed safely and to a high standard.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a technical field plus 4 years of related field experience, or 6 years of equivalent hands-on experience in HVAC / Building Automation.
  • Strong experience with system design, programming, and commissioning of digital HVAC controls.
  • Solid understanding of control theory and building automation systems.
  • Ability to work independently and lead projects with confidence.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency with Windows, Excel, and related applications.
  • Working knowledge of project costing, accounting principles, and contracting.

Nice to Have

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field with 6+ years of HVAC industry experience.
  • Experience preparing project status and performance reports for senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated commitment to employee and subcontractor safety.
