Technical Lead – MES / Manufacturing Systems

Location: Holland, MI

Work Arrangement: Onsite

Experience Level: 8+ Years

Duration: Contract / Long-Term Opportunity / Full Time


Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Technical Lead / MES Technical Architect with strong expertise in Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), manufacturing technology, and IT/OT integration. The ideal candidate will provide technical leadership in designing, implementing, and overseeing scalable MES architectures across production environments.

This role requires a strong combination of MES architecture, manufacturing systems, enterprise integration, industrial automation, software development, cloud technologies, and data architecture.


Key Responsibilities

MES Architecture & Technical Leadership

  • Design and define end-to-end MES application architectures, technology stacks, deployment models, and technical standards.
  • Provide technical leadership for MES implementation and integration projects across manufacturing environments.
  • Develop reference architectures, technical blueprints, coding standards, and design patterns.
  • Ensure MES solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, and aligned with manufacturing requirements.

IT/OT Integration

  • Architect and implement integrations between MES platforms and enterprise systems such as SAP/ERP, PLM, and WMS.
  • Integrate MES solutions with operational technology including PLCs, SCADA, HMI, and data historians.
  • Design reliable data exchange and communication mechanisms between enterprise IT and shop-floor OT systems.

Manufacturing Systems & Core Capabilities

  • Provide technical leadership for production tracking and manufacturing execution capabilities.
  • Design solutions supporting product/material genealogy, material validation, electronic batch records (EBR), and real-time quality controls.
  • Develop architectures that support traceability, production visibility, quality, and operational efficiency.

Integration & Software Architecture

  • Design and implement API-driven, event-driven, microservices, and publish/subscribe architectures.
  • Work with technologies such as OPC UA, MQTT, Sparkplug B, REST APIs, GraphQL, Kafka, RabbitMQ, and HiveMQ.
  • Support Unified Namespace (UNS) architectures and connected manufacturing environments.

Software & Database Development

  • Develop and review backend solutions using C#/.NET, Java, or Python.
  • Design and optimize relational databases using SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL.
  • Establish development standards and ensure high-quality, scalable software solutions.

Cloud & Infrastructure

  • Support hybrid cloud architectures using AWS and/or Azure.
  • Work with containers, serverless technologies, edge computing, and edge network security.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, cybersecurity, software, and manufacturing engineering teams to support secure production environments.


Required Skills

  • 8+ years of experience in MES, Manufacturing Systems, Software Architecture, or related technical domains.
  • Strong experience designing and implementing MES architectures.
  • Experience with one or more MES technologies such as:
  • Critical Manufacturing
  • Ignition
  • Custom MES platforms
  • Strong understanding of IT/OT integration.
  • Experience with OPC UA, MQTT, and Sparkplug B.
  • Experience with REST APIs and/or GraphQL.
  • Strong understanding of Unified Namespace (UNS), event-driven architecture, pub/sub models, and microservices.
  • Strong backend development experience with C#/.NET, Java, or Python.
  • Advanced relational database experience with SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with AWS and/or Azure environments.
  • Understanding of containers, serverless technologies, and edge computing/security.
  • Strong architecture, technical design, troubleshooting, and leadership skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in automotive, battery, EV, industrial, or high-volume manufacturing.
  • Experience with battery manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or HiveMQ.
  • Experience with Docker/containers, serverless technologies, and edge security.
  • Experience integrating MES with SAP/ERP, PLM, WMS, PLC, SCADA, HMI, and historians.
  • Experience with production tracking, genealogy, material validation, EBR, and real-time quality systems.
  • Experience working in connected factory or Smart Manufacturing / Industry 4.0 environments.


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Automation, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience.
  • Strong combination of MES, manufacturing technology, software architecture, and IT/OT integration experience.
