Senior Backend Engineer

Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to help build and scale the core services and platform powering the future of real estate. In this role, you will focus on designing, developing, and optimizing high-performance backend systems — leveraging Java as your primary language alongside Node.js — to power high-throughput APIs, distributed microservices, and data layers that agents and consumers rely on daily.

Responsibilities:

• Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable backend services, microservices, and APIs using Java and Node.js.
• Collaborate across distributed engineering teams, contributing through code reviews, architectural discussions, and agile planning.
• Take ownership of critical backend components, databases, and data infrastructure, ensuring high availability, performance, and extensibility.
• Establish and enforce best practices for server-side code quality, system testing, security, and deployment.
• De-risk complex system evolution by delivering resilient backend features backed by comprehensive automated testing and monitoring.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of technical growth, architectural excellence, and engineering best practices.
• Clearly communicate system design decisions, trade-offs, and technical roadmaps to stakeholders and engineering leadership.

Technical Skills:

• Backend: Java, Node.js, Koa
• APIs & Communication: REST APIs, Thrift, gRPC
• Data & Storage: PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch
• Cloud & Infrastructure: AWS (ECS, Lambda, SQS, API Gateway), Docker, Terraform / AWS CDK
• Build & Development: Bazel, CI/CD Pipelines

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional backend software engineering experience building, scaling, and maintaining production services.
• Strong proficiency and hands-on production experience in Java, with a solid grasp of object-oriented design, concurrency, and performance optimization.
• Proven experience building backend services, microservices, and APIs in Node.js.
• Strong working knowledge of relational and non-relational database systems — particularly PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and Redis.
• Deep familiarity with server-side architecture, microservices patterns, domain modeling, and API design.
• Hands-on experience with cloud-native development on AWS (e.g., ECS, Lambda, SQS, API Gateway, DynamoDB).
• Solid understanding of networking and security fundamentals (DNS, load balancing, caching strategies, authentication, encryption).
• Demonstrated track record of mentoring other engineers and leading technical design initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with search and analytics platforms such as Elasticsearch.
• Experience with RPC frameworks like Thrift or gRPC for low-latency service-to-service communication.
• Hands-on experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, AWS CDK, or CloudFormation).
• Familiarity with monorepos, Bazel, or large-scale build environments.
• Experience with high-throughput event-driven architectures or streaming systems (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, SQS).
