Swoop, founded by Thiel Fellow Aubrey Niederhoffer, raised one of the largest seed rounds for an African consumer startup to build the super-app for Africa, starting with food delivery. Now, we're incredibly excited to formally announce our first fintech-specific hire: one, exceptional founding software engineer.

Role Overview

As a Founding Software Engineer, you will be responsible for building and maintaining the payments infrastructure at the core of Swoop. You'll work directly with the Swoop's founders, own key technical decisions end to end, and shape how payments move through our platform every day.

This role directly carries Swoop's vision to be the super-app for Nigeria. It is someone who wants to build and has the conviction that they can do it better than the incumbents. The ideal candidate is a high-ownership engineer who understands the Nigerian payment space, from NIBSS to virtual assets to payments UX, has shipped production fintech systems, and is excited about scaling a startup.

Key Responsibilities:

Payments Infrastructure

• Build and maintain infrastructure for local naira pay-ins, card processing, and bank transfers.
• Ensure reliability, security, and speed across every transaction on the platform.

Core Financial Systems

• Build the ledgers, reconciliation, and banking integrations that will underpin Swoop's financial products.
• Work with partners and regulators' requirements to keep systems compliant as we scale.

Payments Across the Super-App

• Expand the food delivery app with broader payment functionality.
• Deliver a best-in-class payments experience for customers, stores, and riders.

New Opportunities

• Assess new ideas in the digital payments space with executive leadership, coming up with in-house solutions.

Requirements:

• 4+ years of backend engineering experience, including production payments or fintech systems.
• Strong working knowledge of Nigerian payment rails (cards, NIP transfers, payment providers).
• High attention to correctness: idempotency, reconciliation, security, and uptime.
• A startup mindset – high ownership, hands-on, willing to solve problems outside a fixed job description.

Preferred Qualities and Skills (What We Like!):

• Experience at marquee companies preferred: Paystack, Moniepoint, Flutterwave, Kuda, PiggyVest, etc.
• Extraordinary achievements in any field—from a national competition to a side project that took off. We value exceptional people.
• Experience building financial products from 0 to 1. Not just maintenance!

Compensation:

Salary: USD $2,300 - $4,000+ per month. Potential for sign-on bonus.
