Postdoctoral Researcher
Indexed description
Location: Hannover and/or Lübeck, Germany (Joint project between the Hannover Medical School / MHH, the University of Lübeck, and the UKSH)
Duration: 3 years (Fixed-term)
Starting Date: Flexible (Spring/ Summer 2027)
Salary/Funding: [e.g., TV-L E13]
About the Project & Environment
Are you fascinated by how the biological clock shapes human health and the gut environment? Join our dynamic research team in a collaborative project spanning two of Northern Germany's premier biomedical hubs: the Hannover Medical School (MHH) and the University of Lübeck / UKSH (Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein).
Our project investigates the complex, time-dependent interactions between the host and the microbiome (circadian microbiome research). By combining experimental translational approaches (in vivo mouse models & human cohorts) with cutting-edge computational biology, we aim to uncover novel rhythmic mechanisms driving health and disease. This positions you at the unique intersection of world-class clinical research and advanced data science.
Your Responsibilities
Depending on your primary focus and background (experimental, computational, or a hybrid of both), your tasks will include:
Experimental Track: Planning, conducting, and analyzing circadian experiments utilizing human clinical samples from the UKSH / MHH cohorts and/or mouse models (including chronobiological sampling, microbiota interventions, and downstream molecular assays).
Computational Track: Processing and analyzing large-scale multi-omics data (metagenomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics) generated within the network.
Machine Learning Integration: Developing and applying Machine Learning algorithms to identify predictive microbial patterns and rhythmic biological features.
Collaboration & Writing: Working closely within our interdisciplinary network across Hannover and Lübeck, presenting data at international conferences, and writing scientific manuscripts.
Your Profile
Education: An excellent Master's degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Microbiology, Biomedicine, Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computational Biology, or a related field.
Core Skills (at least one area of expertise required):
Wet Lab / Experimental: Hands-on experience with microbiome culture (in vitro work) and/or mouse models (in vivo work) and/or handling human biological samples.
Experience in microbiology, chronobiology/circadian rhythms is a strong asset.
Dry Lab / Bioinformatics: Strong proficiency in R coding and data visualization. Practical experience in implementing Machine Learning workflows for biological data.
Soft Skills: High motivation, scientific curiosity, and the ability to work independently as well as across multi-center collaborative teams.
Language: Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English (German is an asset but not mandatory).
What We Offer
Cutting-Edge Science: An exciting, highly relevant research topic at the intersection of chronobiology, microbiome research, and artificial intelligence.
Dual-Hub Network: Access to the outstanding scientific infrastructure, high-performance computing clusters, and core facilities at MHH, University of Lübeck (UKSH).
Structured PhD Program: Comprehensive training and enrollment in a local structured graduate school framework (including soft skills courses and travel grants for international conferences).
Supportive Environment: A passionate, international, and mentoring-focused environment that bridges multiple top-tier institutions.
