Historic Richland Cemetery Project

ABOUT THE PROJECT Historic Richland Cemetery, established in 1884 in Greenville, SC, preserves more than 140 years of African American history. Incomplete records and records lost to fire have left the stories of many of the 2,800+ people buried there difficult to find, verify, and share. This work will strengthen connections to resources for underserved veterans and military families and help create a model other communities can use to recover lost cemetery records and bring forgotten history back to life. MEMBER DUTIES As the Data Systems & Research VISTA, you will help build and expand the Veterans of Richland research program and develop the systems behind this effort—including research methods and standards, a historical database, GIS and mapping connections, metadata and evidence documentation, digital collections and histories, and tools that improve public access. You will develop processes, documentation, and training that enable volunteers, researchers, partners, and future VISTAs to contribute to and sustain the work. SERVICE ENVIRONMENT Cemetery fieldwork; research and analysis; City and partner meetings; community talks and presentations; host-site work; and approved teleservice. SKILLS DESIRED Historical/genealogical research; data management; database/digital tools; GIS/mapping; documentation; writing; project management. EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE Associate degree + 2 years of work experience. NATIONAL IMPACT Richland will serve as a pilot for developing and documenting a sustainable model that other communities can adapt to recover lost cemetery records and preserve African American history.
