We're working with a leading UK construction & engineering contractor - a large, well-established business with a multi-billion-pound project pipeline across rail, highways, aviation, energy and infrastructure - as they look to strengthen their ICT Infrastructure Operations team.

This is a genuinely exciting time to join: the business has recently completed a major datacentre and storage modernisation programme and is investing heavily in automating and streamlining its IT operations. They're looking for a 3rd Line Infrastructure Engineer who wants to go beyond "keeping the lights on" - someone who can bring automation thinking (Power Automate, Power Apps) into day-to-day infrastructure operations, while still being a confident, hands-on 3rd line escalation point for a large, complex estate.

This isn't a role for someone who wants to sit heads-down coding all day - it's for a strong infrastructure engineer who communicates well, works cross-functionally with the wider business, and genuinely wants to develop into infrastructure design or architecture over time.

3rd Line Infrastructure Engineer – Key Responsibilities

• Act as a 3rd line escalation point for complex infrastructure incidents, working within ITIL-aligned incident, problem and change management processes
• Manage and support core infrastructure: Windows Server environments, VMware virtualisation, Azure (IaaS/PaaS), and Office 365
• Build and maintain Azure DevOps pipelines and PowerShell scripts to automate routine infrastructure tasks and reduce manual overhead
• Design and build automated workflows using Power Automate and Power Apps to streamline business and IT processes
• Own and resolve escalated tickets via ServiceNow, ensuring SLAs are met and root causes are properly investigated
• Work closely with other IT teams, project managers and business stakeholders to support infrastructure elements of wider projects
• Contribute to the ongoing modernisation and automation roadmap for IT operations
• Support and mentor 2nd line colleagues, sharing knowledge and best practice
• Maintain documentation and contribute to continuous service improvement initiatives

3rd Line Infrastructure Engineer – Key Skills Required

• Proven 3rd line infrastructure/systems engineering experience in an enterprise environment
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Azure (VMs, Azure AD/Entra ID, core services)
• Solid Office 365 administration experience (Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams)
• VMware virtualisation experience (vSphere/vCenter/ESXi)
• Experience working within an ITIL framework (incident, problem, change management)
• Confident working with ticketing/ITSM platforms (ServiceNow experience highly desirable)
• Working knowledge of PowerShell scripting
• Excellent communication skills - able to work confidently with both technical and non-technical stakeholders across the business

Nice to have

• Experience with Power Automate and/or Power Apps
• Azure DevOps experience (pipelines, repos)
• AWS exposure (Azure is the primary focus, AWS is a bonus)
• General project management awareness/exposure
• Enterprise or large-organisation IT background
• Microsoft Azure certifications
• SC clearance or eligibility for SC clearance (not essential - support provided)
• Genuine interest in progressing toward Infrastructure Design/Architecture
