What will you be doing?
We're looking for a Database Migration Leader to drive the migration of our on-premises database environments to the cloud (AWS and/or Azure). This is a hands-on, senior technical role: you'll design the migration strategy, lead execution end-to-end, and stay close to the technical details — writing runbooks, validating cutover plans, and troubleshooting issues alongside the team rather than only managing from a distance.
You'll partner closely with DBAs, application teams, cloud architects, and infrastructure engineering to move critical workloads with minimal downtime and no data loss, while building the migration patterns and automation that make future migrations faster and safer.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end migration strategy for moving on-premises databases (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL) to cloud-native or cloud-hosted equivalents on AWS and/or Azure.
- Lead technical assessment and discovery: inventory source databases, map dependencies, size target environments, and identify migration blockers (schema incompatibilities, stored procedures, licensing, latency-sensitive workloads).
- Implement migration tooling and patterns (e.g., AWS DMS/SCT, Azure Database Migration Service, native replication, backup/restore, CDC-based near-zero-downtime migration).
- Design and execute cutover and rollback plans, including data validation, reconciliation, and post-migration performance tuning.
- Lead a team of engineers/DBAs through migration waves — set technical direction, review work, unblock issues, and stay hands-on for the highest-risk migrations.
- Build repeatable runbooks, automation scripts, and migration playbooks to standardize the process across waves and reduce manual effort.
- Leverage AI tooling to accelerate migrations and data validation efforts.
- Coordinate cutover windows with application owners, infrastructure, and business stakeholders; communicate status, risks, and timelines clearly to leadership.
- Establish monitoring, backup, DR, and security/compliance controls for migrated databases in the cloud target environment.
- Conduct post-migration reviews to capture lessons learned and improve the migration methodology over time.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of database administration or database engineering experience, including production ownership of relational databases at scale.
- 3+ years leading or heavily contributing to database migration projects, ideally on-premises to cloud (AWS and/or Azure).
- Deep hands-on experience with at least one major RDBMS (SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or MySQL) and working familiarity with others.
- Experience with cloud database migration tooling (AWS DMS, AWS SCT, Azure Database Migration Service, or equivalent) and cloud-native database services (RDS, Aurora, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, etc.).
- Strong SQL skills and experience with schema conversion, data validation/reconciliation, and performance tuning pre- and post-migration.
- Experience planning low-downtime or near-zero-downtime cutovers (CDC/replication-based migration approaches).
- Track record of leading technical work streams or small teams, including setting technical direction and reviewing others' work.
- Clear communicator, comfortable presenting migration plans, risks, and status to both technical teams and business stakeholders.
- Cloud certification(s): AWS Certified Database - Specialty, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, or equivalent.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or ARM/Bicep) for provisioning target database environments.
- Experience with AI Native Engineering tooling and skill building.
- Familiarity with heterogeneous migrations (e.g., Oracle to PostgreSQL, SQL Server to Aurora) including application-layer remediation.
- Experience in regulated environments requiring data residency, encryption, or compliance sign-off (HIPAA, PCI, SOC 2, etc.).
- Scripting/automation skills (Python, PowerShell, or Bash) for building migration and validation tooling.
- Migrations completed on schedule with agreed downtime windows met and zero unplanned data loss.
- A documented, repeatable migration playbook adopted across future migration waves.
- Stakeholders consistently informed, with risks flagged early and cutover plans that hold up under pressure.
