PhD candidate (f_m_x) – Modeling the influence of subduction history on TPW and CMB heat flux
Indexed description
The GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences is one of the world's leading institutions in the field of geosciences. As part of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest research organisation, we address global challenges such as natural hazards, climate change and the sustainable use of resources. In doing so, we combine cutting-edge research with social relevance. Our international staff - around 1,200 employees and approx. 500 guests - work in a multidisciplinary way and with a unique infrastructure to research the dynamic processes of the Earth system. Our vision: “Taking the pulse of the Earth to safeguard a habitable planet.”
For section 2.5 Geodynamic Modeling (department “Geophysics”), we are looking for a:
PhD candidate (f_m_x) – Modeling the influence of subduction history on TPW and CMB heat flux
Reference Number 11542
Our section is working on the understanding of geodynamic processes operating inside the solid Earth and their surface manifestation at a broad range of spatial and temporal scales through advanced numerical modeling. Our research foci are located at both plate boundaries and within the plate interiors, inside the deep mantle and at the surface. To approach our aims, we develop our own numerical methods and tools, but also extensively employ and co-develop numerical techniques provided by the international community.
We are looking for one PhD student to join our team in the framework of the DFG Priority Programme DeepDyn. The successful candidate should have strong experience in geodynamic or planetary dynamics modeling, scientific programming, and data visualisation methods. Job responsibilities will include a variety of tasks related to geodynamic research, scientific programming, and data visualisation.
Your Responsibilities
- Conduct scientific research in the field of geodynamic modelling. Including, but not limited to, computing (1) mantle density anomalies and flow, (2) true polar wander, and (3) core-mantle boundary heat flux
- Optimise results according to observational constraints
- Develop scientific visualisations of the results
- Attend scientific meetings, including international conferences, and present results
- Write and submit scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals
- Interaction, coordination and collaboration with other projects within the Priority Programme "DeepDyn"
- Flexible management of project development and goals
- A Master’s degree in geosciences, physics, computer science, mathematics or related natural sciences
- Good programming skills, preferably in Python, Fortran or C++
- Experience with geodynamic modelling software such as ASPECT, StagYY or GAIA
- Experience with high-performance computing, preferably under a Linux operating system
- Excellent communication skills
- Fluency in English (written and oral)
- Experience in data visualisation and scientific programming
- Knowledge of deep Earth or planetary interiors
- Ambitious and varied tasks in a dynamic and international research environment
- State-of-the-art equipment
- Public service benefits
- Extensive training opportunities
- Professional career advice offered by our in-house Career-Centre
- Flexible working hours and conditions
- Support with finding a good work-life balance offered by benefit@work
- Institute day-care centre on site
- Working at the Albert Einstein Science Park on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam
- Workplace within walking distance of Potsdam main train station, or just a short ride on the shuttle bus
Fixed-term: 36 months
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund ”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Part-time 75% (currently 29.25 h/week)
Place of work: Potsdam
