Software Engineer (m/f/d)
Indexed description
Hybrid (up to 40% remote) · AI, Data & Medicine · Interdisciplinary Environment · Vienna
We are building something new at the intersection of software, medical research and clinical care. Our goal is to develop digital technologies that can ultimately improve clinical research and patient care. There are no legacy systems to maintain and no rigid engineering silos. Instead, you will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment where you as software engineer, together with AI researchers, statisticians and physicians develop solutions together. Many of our projects start with a clinical or scientific problem, an idea, or a prototype, and will evolve iteratively into robust digital tools for real-world medical applications.
Our team brings together expertise in statistics, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and clinical medicine. We are now looking for a creative, dynamic, full-stack Software Engineer (both frontend- and backend-strong) who enjoys exploring new ideas, experimenting with solutions, and turning them into useful digital applications. We are looking for someone who is excited by innovation and genuinely interested in applying technology to medicine. You will have the opportunity to work closely with clinicians and researchers, understand the problems they face, and help develop solutions that have the potential to benefit patients.
Your Role
- Design and develop modern, user-centered web applications (frontend is essential).
- Translate complex scientific and clinical needs into intuitive digital interfaces.
- Work closely with AI researchers, statisticians, and clinicians, acting as the technical bridge between disciplines.
- Take ownership of architecture decisions, workflows, and technical standards.
- Build prototypes and evolve them into robust, sustainable digital tools used in real medical contexts.
- Work on technologies primarily intended for clinical research and clinical applications, with a focus on translating scientific and technological innovation into practical tools that can ultimately benefit patients.
- Work iteratively: explore ideas, build prototypes, test them with users, learn from feedback, and continuously improve the solution as requirements and understanding evolve.
What We Expect
This role is not for someone who only executes tickets. We are looking for someone who wants to build, experiment, and innovate and who is motivated by the clinical purpose behind the technology.
- Technical expertise matters, but we are equally interested in how you think, collaborate, and approach problems.
- Strong in both frontend and backend (full-stack) development (modern frameworks such as React, Vue, Angular, or comparable; experienced with backend architecture such as REST API, database design, authentication, etc).
- Creative and solution-oriented, able to think beyond standard implementations.
- Comfortable interacting with clinicians, researchers, and non-technical colleagues.
- Communicative and socially confident, you enjoy collaboration rather than isolated coding.
- Motivated to build structures, not just maintain them.
- Purpose-driven and excited to work in a medical research environment.
- Proficient in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Python, JavaScript, TypeScript).
- Strong command of OOP principles and software design patterns.
- Excellent in English (spoken and written).
- German is a plus.
- Based in Vienna.
What Awaits You
- Build, don't just maintain: help create new software and engineering practices rather than inherit a large legacy codebase.
- Real-world clinical impact: develop digital technologies primarily aimed at medical research and clinical applications.
- Work directly with our experts: collaborate closely with physicians, researchers, statisticians, and AI specialists and understand the problems behind the software.
- Creative ownership: have a real influence on architecture, technology choices, workflows, and technical standards.
- Experiment and iterate: there is room to prototype, test ideas, learn from users, and improve solutions as projects evolve.
- Build something new: help establish how software engineering and digital innovation are implemented within a growing initiative.
- Meaningful purpose: use your engineering skills to develop technology with the potential to make a tangible difference to medical research and, ultimately, patients.
- Flexible working hours and up to 40% remote work.
- Long-term perspective within a stable university setting.
- Annual gross salary (40h/week): €43,000–55,000 depending on qualification and experience. Refer to the exact salary table we can offer over this link: https://br-ap.meduniwien.ac.at/fileadmin/content/OE/br-ap/bilder/Informationen_fuer_MA/Gewerkschaftliches/2026_Uni_KV_Gehaltstabelle_ab_1.1.2026.pdf).
Why This Role Matters
Medicine is generating increasingly sophisticated data and technologies, but turning scientific and technological advances into tools that can actually be used in clinical environments remains a major challenge.
This is where you come in. You will not simply be developing another web application. You will help determine how software engineering, AI, data science, and clinical expertise can work together to solve real problems in medicine. You will not join an established engineering department. You will help shape one.
If you are motivated by innovation, enjoy building things from the ground up, are comfortable with an iterative way of working, and want your engineering skills to have a purpose beyond technology itself, we would be very happy to hear from you.
How to apply
- To apply, please send a) your CV, b) a motivation letter (4,000 characters maximum) stating why you are interested in this position, c) links to projects or repositories you are proud of, and d) your earliest possible start date, by e-mail to [email protected] & [email protected],
- Non-complete applications will not be considered, thank you for your understanding.
