Senior Mainframe Software Engineer – COBOL / z/OS / CICS

Overview

We are seeking a Senior Mainframe Software Engineer to design, develop, test, maintain, and support software applications and products. This role is involved throughout the software development lifecycle, including software architecture, coding, testing, deployment, application performance optimization, and application support.

The position will also leverage AI-assisted development tools and techniques to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and enhance team productivity.

Key Responsibilities

• Engage with customers to understand use cases, pain points, and requirements and advocate for user-centric software solutions.
• Design, develop, test, and deliver software solutions using appropriate tools, programming languages, frameworks, methodologies, and technologies.
• Use AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, or similar LLM-based development assistants.
• Assess software application and service requirements and determine appropriate technology stacks, integration methods, and deployment strategies.
• Create high-level software architecture designs outlining application structure, components, and interfaces.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product owners, designers, and architects.
• Define and implement software testing strategies, guidelines, policies, and processes.
• Continuously improve application performance and optimize applications to increase development efficiency.
• Apply software development practices such as test-driven development, continuous integration, and continuous delivery.
• Support security practices designed to safeguard user data, including encryption and anonymization.
• Create user-friendly and interactive interfaces.
• Develop and maintain back-end applications, including APIs and microservices, using server-side programming languages.
• Evaluate and incorporate emerging technologies and capabilities into software solutions.
• Monitor and participate in solutions involving new technology stack layers and industry collaboration.

• Bachelor's degree.
• 10+ years of IT experience.
• 8+ years of software development experience.
• Practical experience in two coding languages or advanced practical experience in one coding language.
• Experience with COBOL and mainframe systems.
• Experience with z/OS.
• Experience with CICS.
• Experience with JCL.
• Experience with TSO/ISPF.
• Experience with IBM DB2 and SQL.
• Experience with REST APIs and JSON.
• Experience with software testing and application testing.
• Experience with performance testing and root cause analysis.
• Experience with batch processing and program analysis.
• Experience with requirements analysis and application support.
• Experience with Agile software development.
• Experience with GitHub.
• Experience with GitHub Copilot and AI-assisted development.
• Experience with prompt engineering, LLM API integration, and AI code review.
• Experience with CA-7 and AIPGEE.

• Hybrid work environment with four days per week in the office.
