We are seeking a Systems Engineer – HVAC, Doors, Couplers & Gangways to support the production and integration of critical passenger rail vehicle systems at our Lexington manufacturing facility.
This role serves as the on-site technical expert and systems integration lead for HVAC, door systems, movable steps, gap fillers, lifts, couplers, and gangways. Working closely with engineering architects, production teams, suppliers, and global engineering partners, you will ensure these complex electromechanical systems are successfully integrated, manufactured, tested, and delivered in compliance with customer, regulatory, and safety requirements.
This is a highly collaborative position offering direct exposure to rail vehicle design, manufacturing operations, systems integration, and international engineering teams.
What You'll Do
Systems Integration & Manufacturing Support
- Serve as the on-site systems engineering expert for HVAC, door, coupler, and gangway systems throughout vehicle production.
- Support manufacturing, commissioning, and testing activities to ensure system performance and compliance.
- Troubleshoot complex production and integration challenges and drive timely technical solutions.
- Partner with production engineering, manufacturing, quality, and testing teams to resolve technical issues and eliminate root causes.
- Work closely with System Architects and Engineering leadership to maintain technical alignment throughout vehicle production.
- Interpret system requirements, engineering documentation, design reviews, and contract deliverables.
- Ensure mechanical, electrical, and software interfaces are properly integrated in the as-built vehicle configuration.
- Evaluate engineering changes and support implementation within production.
- Collaborate regularly with engineering teams throughout North America and Europe.
- Coordinate with suppliers and internal stakeholders to resolve design, manufacturing, and integration challenges.
- Support vehicle-level technical reviews and engineering investigations.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance product quality, manufacturability, and reliability.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and production teams.
- Share lessons learned and best practices across engineering and manufacturing organizations.
- Drive a culture of accountability, innovation, and operational excellence.
- Travel up to 10%, including occasional domestic and international travel to customer sites, suppliers, and Siemens engineering locations.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline with 5+ years of relevant experience, OR
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline with 2+ years of relevant experience, OR
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering with 1+ year of relevant experience.
- Experience designing, integrating, or supporting complex electromechanical systems.
- Experience utilizing 3D CAD software for product design and integration, preferably PTC Creo.
- Ability to interpret and work with electrical schematics and technical drawings.
- Experience supporting manufacturing, production engineering, or industrial environments.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to resolve technical challenges on the manufacturing floor.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical topics to diverse audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while balancing schedule, quality, and cost objectives.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States on a continual and permanent basis without sponsorship.
- Experience within rail, rolling stock, aerospace, automotive, heavy equipment, industrial manufacturing, or other complex engineered product industries.
- Experience supporting vehicle systems integration, manufacturing engineering, or product launch activities.
- Understanding of passenger rail vehicle systems and subsystem integration.
- Familiarity with heavy rail standards and specifications applicable to HVAC, door systems, couplers, and gangways.
- Experience working with international engineering organizations and suppliers.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License.
- Direct experience with passenger rail vehicle HVAC, Doors, Couplers, or Gangway systems.
