SUMMARY:
The Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and support of industrial fan systems. This role applies sound mechanical engineering principles to create reliable, efficient, and manufacturable fan and air-moving solutions that meet customer, regulatory, and company requirements. The position works closely with manufacturing, sales, and quality teams throughout the product lifecycle.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design and develop commercial fan systems, assemblies, and components using accepted engineering standards and best practices
- Develop models for advanced engineering analysis
- Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of materials
- Perform engineering calculations and analyses related to airflow, pressure, stress, vibration, and performance
- Support prototype builds, testing, and validation of fan system designs
- Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure designs are cost-effective and manufacturable
- Assist with troubleshooting field or production issues and implement design improvements
- Support customization and application engineering efforts for customer-specific requirements
- Ensure designs comply with applicable industry codes, safety standards, and regulations
- Maintain accurate design documentation and revision control
OTHER:
- Assist Engineers or Lab Technicians when necessary.
- Develop or oversee the development of necessary computer programs for process improvement, product design and application.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Will guide other Design personnel, Engineers and Lab Technicians on specific projects.
TRAVEL:
Local travel will be required. May be required to occasionally travel overnight to conferences, seminars, other Morrison/Lau facilities or customer plants.
CONFIDENTIALITY:
Handles product design details, test data, costing, trade secrets, customer proprietary information and manufacturing process information on a daily basis.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME)
• 3–5 years of mechanical design experience, preferably with fan systems, rotating equipment, or air-handling products
• Proficiency with 3D CAD software and drawing creation
• Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, including materials, tolerances, and manufacturing processes
• Familiar with using FEA software (Ansys Mechanical for example) to evaluate stress, displacement, and modal response of fan systems and structures
• Ability to perform engineering calculations and interpret test data
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience designing industrial or commercial fan systems
• Familiarity with airflow and performance testing standards (e.g., AMCA or similar)
• Experience supporting products in a manufacturing environment
• Knowledge of vibration, noise, and rotating equipment dynamics
