Mechanical Designer - Tooling

About the Role

We are working with a long-established engineering and manufacturing company in the Dayton area that is looking to add a Mechanical Designer to its tooling engineering team.

This position will focus on the design and modification of precision tooling used within custom industrial equipment. Much of the work involves adapting proven designs for new customer applications, so this is a strong fit for someone who enjoys detailed, accuracy-driven mechanical design and improving existing products rather than working exclusively from a blank sheet.

The company primarily uses SolidWorks and is looking for someone comfortable designing detailed mechanical components and assemblies while considering tolerances, manufacturability, cost, and overall functionality.

Responsibilities

• Design and modify tooling and mechanical components using SolidWorks
• Adapt existing tooling designs for new customer-specific applications
• Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings
• Apply appropriate dimensions, tolerances, and GD&T to engineering drawings
• Design components with manufacturability, fit, function, and cost in mind
• Work with machined and other precision mechanical components
• Create and maintain engineering documentation and BOMs
• Collaborate closely with engineering, manufacturing, and project teams
• Troubleshoot and improve existing tooling designs
• Support the development of new and improved generations of tooling
• Manage multiple design projects while meeting project timelines and requirements

Qualifications

• Approximately 3–7+ years of mechanical design, product design, tooling design, or similar experience preferred
• Strong experience with SolidWorks
• Experience creating detailed manufacturing drawings
• Understanding of mechanical tolerances and precision component design
• Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, manufacturing-ready designs
• Experience working with machined parts, mechanical assemblies, or manufactured products
• Ability to work effectively from existing designs and engineering standards while identifying opportunities for improvement
• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline preferred; equivalent hands-on design experience will also be considered

• Tooling, fixture, jig, or workholding design
• GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis
• Precision machined components
• Custom machinery or industrial equipment
• Product or configured-product design
• Autodesk Inventor experience
