🚀 Senior BMS / Controls Design Engineer | Data Centers & Mission Critical | Remote
We are partnering with a premier engineering firm expanding their mission-critical division. They are searching for a Senior BMS / Controls Design Engineer to lead production design, sequence logic development, and controls architecture for complex hyperscale data center builds.
Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on, production-focused Senior BMS / Controls Design Engineer to lead the engineering and documentation of complex Building Management Systems (BMS), Environmental Control Systems, and SCADA architectures. This individual will play a vital role in executing full design packages—ranging from Sequences of Operation (SOO) and I/O summary tables to network architecture risers—primarily for high-reliability data centers, mission-critical infrastructure, and complex commercial facilities.
This role is ideal for a controls engineer who thrives on production design execution, technical rigor, and quality assurance. You will bridge the gap between high-level mechanical narratives and detailed, buildable controls drawings while providing technical mentorship to junior engineering staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Production Design & Deliverables: Develop, review, and finalize complete BMS/controls design packages, including detailed Sequences of Operation (SOO), point lists, I/O schedules, control schematics, valve/damper schedules, and network topology risers.
- BIM & CAD Execution: Perform hands-on production modeling and drafting using Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD to integrate controls hardware, panel layouts, and cable pathways into broader MEP design models.
- Mission-Critical Integration: Design and validate complex integration interfaces between BMS, EPMS, SCADA, PLCs, and critical power/cooling equipment (UPS, ATS, generators, chillers, CRAHs, and switchgear).
- Technical Quality Assurance: Conduct rigorous design package reviews to identify sequence gaps, I/O channel mismatches, and network protocol conflicts prior to construction.
- Construction Administration (CA): Support site-specific CA duties across the team, including reviewing contractor submittals, responding to RFIs, performing site visits/walkthroughs, and assisting field teams during commissioning phases.
- Mentorship & Governance: Help establish and refine internal BMS design standards, template libraries, and quality control procedures while guiding junior controls engineers.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Experience: 6+ years of dedicated experience in building automation systems (BAS/BMS), controls engineering, or MEP consulting design.
- Facility Focus: Proven track record delivering controls design packages for mission-critical data centers, high-tech manufacturing, or complex critical infrastructure.
- Production Mindset: Strong passion for remaining hands-on in production engineering and drawing creation (not seeking a purely managerial role).
- Software Fluency: Hands-on proficiency or strong technical aptitude with Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD for production modeling and drawing set generation.
- Protocols & Networking: Thorough understanding of open and proprietary field protocols (BACnet IP/MS-TP, Modbus RTU/TCP, OPC-UA, SNMP, EtherNet/IP) and industrial IT/OT network architectures.
Preferred Attributes
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent practical field experience.
- Active industry certifications (e.g., Niagara N4 Certified, CCNA, or professional engineering credentials).
- Strong, self-motivated work ethic with a positive, solutions-oriented attitude toward learning and cross-discipline collaboration.
