Gas Turbine Mechanical Design Engineer

Overview

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to own mechanical design and CAD for gas turbine engine components and full assemblies. This role focuses on robust mechanical interfaces, tolerance control, drawings, and BOMs to ensure manufacturability, repeatable assembly, and compliance with aerospace documentation standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end mechanical design and CAD for complete engine assemblies/sub-assemblies (not just individual parts), including fit-up and assembly sequence considerations.

• Create and maintain detailed 3D models and 2D production drawings, applying ASME Y14.5 GD&T and company drafting standards.

• Develop and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs), part structures, and drawing release packages; ensure configuration consistency across models, drawings, and BOMs.

• Define mechanical interfaces, fits, tolerances, and tolerance stack-ups for static and rotating hardware; ensure alignment with assembly practices and inspection methods.

• Prepare and maintain interface control documentation (ICDs) and assembly documentation (exploded views, assembly notes, torque specs, etc.).

• Partner with manufacturing, materials, supply chain, and test teams to resolve design issues, support build activities, and drive design-for-manufacture/assembly improvements.

• Participate in design reviews, support change management (ECR/ECO), and contribute to risk assessments (e.g., FMEA/PFMEA) as needed.

Basic Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (Bachelor’s acceptable with significant relevant experience).

• 5+ years of mechanical design experience for gas turbine, turbomachinery, or related rotating equipment.

• Proficiency with CAD tools for complex assemblies (Siemens NX preferred).

• Demonstrated ability to produce production-quality drawings, manage revisions, and maintain accurate BOMs.

• Strong understanding of mechanical interfaces, fits, tolerances, tolerance stack-ups, and assembly/inspection practices.

• Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 / GD&T and practical application on manufacturing drawings.

• Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes relevant to turbomachinery or other types of rotating equipment

• Qualify as a U.S. Person under ITAR §120.62.

Preferred Qualifications

• 10+ years of mechanical design experience, including ownership of complex rotating machinery assemblies.

• Experience working with aero engines (turbojet, turbofan, turboprop) or aerospace gas turbine hardware.

• Experience defining clearance and sealing strategies across operating conditions, accounting for thermal growth and assembly variability.

• Experience with Teamcenter PLM and formal design release/change processes (ECR/ECO, baselines, configuration control).

• Familiarity with airworthiness/certification requirements and aerospace quality systems.

• Experience supporting engine build, instrumentation routing, and test stand integration, including troubleshooting during assembly and test.

Plus (Nice-to-Have)

• Experience with engine architecture and component layout development (including multi-spool configurations, bearing/sealing systems, and mounting strategies).

• Experience developing and maintaining high-level configuration layouts and system-level packaging constraints.

Tools & Standards

• CAD: Siemens NX (preferred) / SolidWorks / CATIA / Creo

• PLM: Teamcenter (preferred) / Windchill

• Drafting: ASME Y14.5 GD&T

• Documentation: BOM management, drawing release, and configuration control best practices

Typical Deliverables

• 3D CAD models for assemblies/sub-assemblies and related parts.

• Manufacturing drawings with GD&T, notes, and inspection requirements.

• Accurate BOMs and part structures aligned with released drawing packages.

• Assembly documentation (exploded views, assembly notes, and build packages).

• Interface control documents (ICDs) and change documentation supporting configuration baselines.

  • Compensation: Competitive compensation, PTO and benefits.
