Principal Electric Motor Design Engineer
Indexed description
Jacobi Motors is developing variable flux memory motor technology. We are seeking an accomplished electric machine designer to advance our motor architectures and deliver practical, manufacturable products.
You will take technical ownership of assigned product lines and development programs, from requirements and architecture selection through validated hardware. This hands-on leadership role combines independent design responsibility with collaboration across technical leaders, mentorship, and shared engineering tools. We value sound judgment, rapid iteration, and demonstrated results.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Assess existing designs, identify fundamental limitations, and lead architecture and electromagnetic design improvements for assigned programs.
- Balance torque, speed, efficiency, thermal limits, packaging, material availability, cost, and manufacturability to meet application requirements.
- Personally execute analytical calculations and electromagnetic FEA; develop Python automation and optimization workflows that improve speed and reliability.
- Resolve critical uncertainties early, select the appropriate level of analysis, and move designs efficiently through review, prototype build, and validation.
- Define electromagnetic and thermal test plans with controls and testing teams; correlate results, diagnose discrepancies, and implement improvements.
- Collaborate on cooling, rotor integrity, NVH, durability, mechanical design, drawings, manufacturing release, and powertrain and controls integration.
- Support material selection, supplier engagement, prototype manufacturing, process evaluation, and transition toward production.
- Lead design reviews, mentor engineers, and collaborate across product lines to strengthen shared methods and advance commercially viable motor technology.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Extensive electric machine design experience, typically 10+ years, with substantial personal ownership of motor architectures and design decisions.
- A demonstrated record of taking motor designs from requirements through detailed design, prototype builds, and physical validation, with measurable results.
- Deep understanding of magnetic circuits, saturation, losses, torque production, demagnetization, and performance across the speed–torque envelope.
- Practical experience evaluating multiple motor topologies and recognizing when an application requires a fundamentally different design approach.
- Expert proficiency in ANSYS Maxwell, JMAG, COMSOL, or comparable electromagnetic FEA tools; Motor-CAD or equivalent experience is valuable.
- Strong engineering judgment: check models against first principles, understand their limitations, and validate predictions against test data.
- Proficiency in Python or similar tools for calculations, automation, optimization, and data analysis; a record of efficient, disciplined development.
- Practical knowledge of motor materials, windings, manufacturing methods, tolerances, and their effects on performance, durability, and cost.
- Ability to lead independently, communicate technical decisions clearly, collaborate constructively, and develop less experienced engineers.
- A degree in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience. Advanced degrees are valued; demonstrated design accomplishments are essential.
Additional experience we value
- Taking electric machines into production and resolving industrialization challenges.
- Novel motor architectures, variable flux machines, alternative magnet materials, or demanding traction and actuator applications.
- Substantially improving an existing design or delivering challenging motor programs in a small engineering team.
