We are seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to support the design and finalization of electrical power and fiber-optic connections for a train stations in Honolulu.
About the Role
The engineer will be responsible for reviewing existing site conditions, designing power branch circuits and fiber-optic connections, coordinating with project stakeholders and equipment suppliers, and preparing complete engineering packages in AutoCAD and PDF formats.
Responsibilities
- Design of power connections cables between the low Voltage distribution Panel “EL1” of the fixed facility (FFC) contractor and the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) and connected NAC power supply (branch circuits per NEC) within the Train Control and Communications Room (TCCR) at each HART train station.
- Design of power connection cables between the Low Voltage Distribution Panel “EL1” and the NAC external FDAS power supplies (branch circuits per NEC) where installed.
- Design of applicable fiber optic drop cables for the fiber optic connection between the FACP and the fiber Distribution Panel (FDP) at each train station TCCR.
- Conduct meetings with Hitachi Rail Honolulu JV (HRH) and HART to coordinate the design activity and close out the open comments.
- Cables will be purchased by Hitachi Rail Honolulu JV.
- Drawing review and field survey of constructed sites to observe / determine existing conditions.
- Electrical coordination with actual equipment provided / installed and / or equipment suppliers and contractors.
- “HNL-75700 FDAS Wire Design within TCCR Drawing” shall be submitted in Autocad DWG and PDF formats, including drawings, calculations, product data, installation nates.
- The drawing shall be PE stamped
- The design shall be compliant with the HART technical specifications (provided by HRH), local laws, NFPA 70, NFPA 130, NFPA 72 related to the FDAS.
- Review of the HRH installer prepared “As Built record drawing” and revise of the HNL-75700 drawing after Installation and Commissioning.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Demonstrated experience designing low-voltage electrical distribution systems and NEC-compliant branch circuits.
- Experience with fire detection and alarm systems, including FACPs, NAC circuits, and external power supplies.
Strong working knowledge of:
- NFPA 70 – National Electrical Code;
- NFPA 72 – National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code; and
- NFPA 130 – Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and the preparation of construction-ready electrical drawings.
- Experience performing site surveys and adapting designs to existing or as-built conditions.
- Ability to prepare electrical calculations, technical specifications, equipment schedules, installation details, and product-data packages.
- Experience coordinating with clients, contractors, equipment suppliers, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Strong technical writing, communication, and comment-resolution skills.
Prefered Skills
- Previous experience on rail, metro, airport, or other major transportation infrastructure projects.
- Experience with fiber-optic cabling and telecommunications infrastructure.
- Familiarity with Train Control and Communications Rooms and station-level systems integration.
- Experience reviewing shop drawings, installation documentation, and as-built record drawings.
