Senior Engineer – Microscopy & Imaging Systems

Location: Göttingen, Germany

Salary: €68,000–€82,000 per annum

We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineer – Microscopy & Imaging Systems to develop next-generation microscopy and high-resolution imaging platforms for scientific and industrial applications.

This is a hands-on senior engineering role for an optical specialist with strong experience in imaging systems, optical alignment and system optimisation.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the development and optimisation of advanced microscopy and high-resolution imaging systems.
• Define optical architectures and translate application requirements into practical imaging solutions.
• Design and optimise illumination systems, objective configurations and imaging paths.
• Select, integrate and characterise cameras, optical components and imaging hardware.
• Perform optical alignment, calibration and system characterisation.
• Optimise image quality, resolution, contrast, signal-to-noise and overall system performance.
• Develop and evaluate image-processing and analysis approaches to improve measurement and imaging capability.
• Investigate optical aberrations, alignment errors and other factors affecting image quality.
• Integrate optical, mechanical, electronic and software subsystems into complete imaging platforms.
• Design and execute experiments to validate optical performance against defined specifications.
• Troubleshoot complex optical and imaging problems and lead root-cause investigations.
• Support prototype development, testing and transition of new imaging technologies into robust systems.
• Work closely with multidisciplinary R&D and engineering teams throughout the development lifecycle.
• Contribute to technical design reviews, system specifications and validation plans.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers.
• Fluorescence and/or confocal microscopy experience would be highly advantageous.

Requirements

• Degree or equivalent experience in Optical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Imaging Science or a related discipline.
• Several years of professional experience developing optical imaging or microscopy systems.
• Strong practical knowledge of microscopy, optical alignment and imaging system design.
• Experience with illumination systems, objectives, cameras and optical components.
• Understanding of image processing and quantitative image analysis.
• Experience with optical system integration, testing and characterisation.
• Strong troubleshooting and experimental problem-solving skills.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary R&D environments.
• Fluorescence, confocal or other advanced microscopy experience is desirable.
