Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) is recruiting to fill a Traffic Engineer (Civil Engineer Transportation Senior or Advanced) position within the North Central Region.

This full-time permanent position will be headquartered in Wisconsin Rapids or Rhinelander.

This position offers a hybridized work schedule. The position will be headquartered at and required to work from one of the DTSD North Central office buildings at least 2 days per week. This schedule may change based on operational needs and organizational requirements. All employees working a hybrid work schedule are generally expected to telework from within the State of Wisconsin. This topic will be discussed more at the time of the interview.

Position Summary

This position will perform routine up to complex traffic functions of an engineering nature for the entire North Central Region. This position will provide traffic engineering direction and guidance to engineering technicians, engineering specialists and other civil engineers. The position will perform engineering analysis for projects and will require frequent contacts with project personnel, contractors, local officials and the public. The position is responsible for communicating simple up to complex traffic principles/decisions and will perform engineering reviews. This position requires traffic engineering knowledge, including traffic management and safety strategies.

This position functions as a work zone traffic control engineer for the North Central Region. Primary and critical duties focus on providing technical guidance and acceptance in all stages of development of the Transportation Management Plan (TMP) for all projects and associated work zone traffic control management.

Under the guidance and direction of the Traffic Engineering Supervisor, this position coordinates and recommends approval of the Lane Closure System (LCS) entries for the North Central Region. Primary and critical duties focus on providing leadership, guidance and direction in all stages of the development and approval processes of lane closures for all projects and work activities within the region.

The objective level of this position is Civil Engineer Transportation Advanced.

Salary Information

The Civil Engineer Transportation Senior position is in schedule-range (14-13) with an annual salary of $84,656-$104,458, plus excellent benefits.

The Civil Engineer Transportation Advanced position is in schedule-range (14-13) with an annual salary of $92,768-$114,483, plus excellent benefits.

This position will also receive an additional $2,080 per year for a Professional Engineer License.

A twelve-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

This position will receive standby pay at the rate of $3.00 per hour. See job details below for further information.

A $3,000 sign-on bonus applies to those who do not have any prior permanent full-time state service in the last five years and agree to remain in the position for one year. The $3,000 will be paid on the first paycheck.

Job Details

This position requires the ability to independently travel throughout the North Central Region as well as occasional statewide travel.

This position requires fieldwork. This fieldwork can include working in all seasons, including adverse weather conditions and working in high volume traffic conditions, bending on a limited basis, and lifting approximately 20 lbs. and carrying this load approximately 50 feet over varying terrain.

This position is required to serve in standby status as a member of the Region’s Statewide Incident Notification Team on a rotational basis.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate at the Senior level will have the following:

• Upon application, candidates must have graduated from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) ABET accredited college or university with a 4-year bachelor's degree (or Master's or PH.D.) in engineering OR have graduated from an Engineer Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) accredited college university with a 4-year bachelor's degree (or Master's or PH.D.) in engineering technology AND hold an Engineering in Training (EIT) certification OR possess a PE license (registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Wisconsin OR a valid Professional Engineering registration and be able to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state).
• At least 4 years of engineering experience after receiving their degree from an ABET accredited college or university.

To be eligible at the Advanced level, candidates must have a valid Professional Engineering (PE) registration and the ability to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state.
