Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Senior Hardware Design Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in Sydney, Australia.
A Senior Hardware Design Engineer is required to ensure that this scope is designed in a coordinated, structured and technically consistent manner, with clear definition of physical interfaces, installation requirements, and compliance considerations. The role provides a single point of technical responsibility for hardware design, ensuring continuity of approach and alignment across the programme.
Key responsibilities:
The Senior Hardware Design Engineer is responsible for the design and specification of physical hardware components, based on subsystem inputs. This includes:
- Development of rack layouts and equipment configurations, ensuring appropriate space allocation, access, and maintainability
- Definition of cable routing approaches across stations, trackside, tunnel, depot, and facility environments
- Design of fibre and copper cable terminations, including physical interface requirements
- Establishment of power supply requirements, including load allocation and distribution considerations
- Incorporation of thermal and heat load constraints into hardware configurations
- Design of earthing and bonding arrangements in accordance with project requirements
- Consideration of EMI/EMC principles within physical design, including segregation and routing practices
- Definition of equipment mounting solutions, including racks, desks, walls, and specialist installations such as video walls
- Specification of cable containment and installation constraints, where applicable
- Proven experience in hardware design within rail or comparable infrastructure environments
- Strong technical knowledge of cabling systems, rack layouts, equipment installation, and power distribution
- Working understanding of earthing, bonding, and EMI/EMC principles as applied to physical design
- Experience in producing structured, detailed, and installation-ready engineering design documentation
- Ability to interpret and translate multi-discipline subsystem requirements into coherent hardware designs
- Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline
