Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Schertz, TX 78154
- Work Arrangement: Onsite
- Salary: $110,000–$115,000 per year
- Travel: Approximately 10%, including occasional overnight stays for customer installations

JOB DESCRIPTION:
- The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will work within a multidisciplinary design team and is responsible for the design, development, and support of all aspects of mechanical systems for custom industrial automation machinery, throughout all phases of the project lifecycle
- Qualified candidates will be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures in the field of electro-mechanical equipment design and manufacture. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience designing custom automation equipment and be capable of managing projects through the complete mechanical design lifecycle, from conceptual design through manufacturing, assembly, installation, and troubleshooting
Detailed responsibilities include:
- Extensive time spent using SolidWorks CAD software
- Development of conceptual designs for custom automation equipment
- Creation of CAD models for all parts of a project
- Creation of CAD assemblies
- Creation of manufacturing drawings
- Creation of assembly drawings with accurate Bill of Materials (BOM) for the assembly department
- Specifying purchased components from various vendors
- Entering purchased parts in the purchasing schedule to release for procurement
- Entering projects into E2 Shop Tech Scheduler
- Serving as project manager for various projects while assisting other engineers with ancillary efforts
- Tracking all aspects of an assigned project
- Creation of project documentation
- Troubleshooting and resolving mechanical design and equipment issues
- Supporting the mechanical design process through fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation
- Periodic travel to customer sites for evaluation and installation efforts
The successful candidate must be capable of managing the full mechanical project lifecycle and have a strong track record of completing substantial custom automation projects. Candidates should have experience with approximately 21–30 or more significant projects, rather than primarily a high volume of small or limited-scope projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum Bachelor's degree in mechanical, industrial, or similar engineering or related technical field
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in equipment design, with 8+ years preferred for senior-level consideration
- Excellent SolidWorks CAD skills are required
- Strong experience designing custom industrial automation equipment
- Excellent technical, organizational, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage mechanical design projects through the full project lifecycle
- Proven experience delivering multiple substantial equipment design projects
THE PREFERRED CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:
- SolidWorks certifications (CSWP or CSWE)
- Significant experience in both robotics and hard automation
- Significant experience with hydraulic and/or pneumatic systems and related controls
- Ability to lead a project through the entire mechanical phase of design
- Understanding of controls automation components
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting and equipment problem-solving skills
- Experience taking custom automation designs from concept through manufacturing, assembly, testing, and installation
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering and design team
KEY REQUIREMENTS:
- This is a highly technical senior-level design position, and candidates are expected to meet nearly all of the requirements outlined above
In particular, candidates must have:
- Excellent SolidWorks CAD skills
- Strong experience in custom automation and equipment design
- Demonstrated ability to manage the full project lifecycle
- Significant experience designing and delivering substantial custom automation projects
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities
- Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Willingness to work onsite in Schertz, TX
- Willingness to travel approximately 10%, including occasional overnight stays for customer installation activities
INTERVIEW PROCESS
Candidates who meet the qualifications will proceed through a structured interview process:
- First Interview – Phone Screening: Initial phone interview to discuss experience, technical background, project history, and overall fit for the position
- Second Interview – Team Interview: Candidates advancing to the second round will meet with the engineering/team members for a more detailed discussion of their technical experience and project background
- SolidWorks Evaluation: Candidates who advance to the second-round interview will complete a SolidWorks skills evaluation. This assessment is intended to validate the candidate's practical CAD capabilities and proficiency with SolidWorks
