Piping Engineer

The Piping Field Engineer Specialist supports construction, quality verification, testing readiness, and system turnover activities through detailed field inspections, system verification, and documentation review.

This role is responsible for verifying installed piping systems against engineering and construction requirements, identifying and documenting discrepancies, supporting test package development, and ensuring systems are mechanically complete and ready for testing, commissioning, and turnover.

Key Responsibilities

A. Field Walkdowns / System Verification

• Perform system and test package walkdowns to verify installation against:
• Isometric drawings
• Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
• Plot plans and construction drawings
• Identify, document, and track punch list items and installation deficiencies.
• Verify:
• Valve orientation and installation requirements
• Valve accessibility and operability
• Proper installation of valves, fittings, supports, and other piping components
• Piping routing, elevations, slopes, and tie-ins in accordance with design requirements
• Document discrepancies and coordinate resolution with appropriate project personnel.

B. Quality Verification Support

• Support quality inspections to ensure compliance with:
• Project specifications
• Applicable codes and standards
• Company quality requirements
• Verify:
• Flange alignment and integrity
• Bolt-up completion
• Material traceability requirements
• Pipe cleanliness and preservation requirements
• Assist in identifying, documenting, and tracking nonconformance issues.

C. Test Package & Turnover Support

• Assist with preparation, review, and verification of testing and turnover packages.
• Confirm:
• System boundaries and testing limits
• Installation completeness of all required components
• Accuracy and completeness of pressure testing documentation
• Track and support:
• Hydrostatic and pneumatic test readiness
• Flushing and cleaning activities
• Mechanical completion status
• System turnover readiness

D. Construction Support & Coordination

• Provide technical support to construction teams during installation activities.
• Coordinate closely with:
• Construction supervision
• Engineering teams
• Quality and commissioning personnel
• Assist in resolving:
• Installation issues
• Design discrepancies
• Constructability concerns
• Field execution challenges

E. Documentation & Reporting

• Generate, maintain, and update:
• Walkdown reports
• Punch lists
• System status reports
• Turnover readiness documentation
• Ensure inspection, testing, and turnover documentation is complete, accurate, and current.
• Support progress tracking and reporting requirements.

F. Safety and Quality Compliance

• Participate in:
• Daily job briefings
• Toolbox talks
• Safety meetings
• Quality meetings
• Adhere to all project safety requirements, quality standards, and site procedures.
• Support the safe execution of:
• Construction activities
• Pressure testing operations
• Mechanical completion activities
• System turnover and commissioning support efforts

Typical Daily Activities

• Conduct piping system walkdowns and inspections.
• Review installation against engineering drawings and specifications.
• Verify valve orientation, tagging, and installation details.
• Create and update punch lists.
• Track system status from construction through testing and turnover.
• Support test package compilation, verification, and closeout activities.
• Coordinate with construction, engineering, quality, and commissioning teams.

Required Qualifications

• 5 to 12 years of piping, mechanical, or related field engineering experience preferred.
• Experience supporting process piping construction and installation projects.
• Strong ability to interpret:
• P&IDs
• Isometric drawings
• Plot plans
• Construction and engineering drawings
• Working knowledge of ASME B31.3 and related piping codes and standards.
• Proven ability to perform field inspections and identify installation discrepancies.
• Strong communication, documentation, and coordination skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced construction environment.

Additional Information

• Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which may include night shifts, split shifts, weekends, and overtime as project requirements dictate.
• Position requires the ability to perform field inspections in active industrial or construction environments.
• Frequent walking throughout large project sites is required, including exposure to varying weather and environmental conditions.
• Must be capable of:
• Climbing ladders and scaffolding
• Working on elevated platforms
• Traversing uneven terrain
• Working in confined or restricted-access areas
• Performing physically demanding field activities for extended periods
• Occasional lifting may be required.
• Must be able to safely enter and exit all assigned work areas.
