Immediate opening for a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer in Whippany, NJ who possesses:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Aeronautical Engineering, or related field
  • 6+ years of mechanical engineering experience
  • Experience in the defense or aerospace industry required
  • Experience with both design and testing of mechanisms, including gearing, electromechanical systems, motors, and/or actuators
  • Advanced ProE/Creo 3D modeling experience

FULL DESCRIPTION: We are seeking a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer to support equipment design, development, testing, analysis, and sustaining engineering activities within a defense and aerospace environment. This role is responsible for mechanical design, 3D modeling, specifications, design reviews, test planning, prototype evaluation, stress analysis, trade studies, failure analysis, and technical reporting. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical engineering experience, advanced ProE/Creo skills, defense or aerospace industry experience, and hands-on experience designing and testing mechanisms such as transmissions, rotating machinery, gearing, motors, actuators, hoisting systems, or winching equipment.


The selected candidate will be responsible for:

  • Designing and developing mechanical equipment and systems
  • Creating complex 3D models using ProE/Creo
  • Converting 3D models into 2D drawings and related engineering documentation
  • Applying geometric dimensioning and tolerancing to mechanical designs
  • Producing specifications and outline designs
  • Preparing reports and supporting design reviews
  • Managing engineering projects using engineering principles and techniques
  • Recommending design modifications based on prototype test results
  • Defining and supporting test programs
  • Performing stress analysis, trade studies, and failure analysis
  • Planning and designing new production processes
  • Applying mechanics of materials principles to design and analysis work
  • Supporting design and development of mechanisms, gearing, electromechanical systems, motors, actuators, and related assemblies
  • Assisting with sustaining engineering projects and activities
  • Performing electrical and interconnect design as required
  • Creating technical reports and engineering documentation
  • Coordinating with draftsmen, technicians, engineers, and other team members on specific assignments
  • Supporting cross-functional engineering, production, quality, and testing teams
  • Performing other duties as assigned


The selected candidate will also possess:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent required
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering preferred
  • 6+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience required
  • Defense or aerospace industry experience required
  • Advanced and demonstrated ProE/Creo capability required
  • Experience with mechanical systems required
  • Experience with rotating machinery preferred
  • Experience with transmissions, mechanisms, clutches, gears, drums, cabling, hoisting equipment, or winching equipment preferred
  • Experience with electromechanical systems, motors, and/or actuators required
  • Experience with both design and testing of mechanisms required
  • New product design experience preferred
  • Experience performing stress analysis preferred
  • Experience performing trade studies preferred
  • Experience performing failure analysis preferred
  • Experience defining or supporting test programs preferred
  • GD&T experience required
  • Ability to create specifications, drawings, reports, and technical documentation required
  • Ability to work independently while taking direction from a technical lead required
  • Strong mechanical design and analytical skills required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required
  • Ability to work onsite in Whippany, NJ
  • Ability to support a full-time opportunity


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods while designing, modeling, reviewing drawings, preparing reports, and completing engineering documentation
  • Ability to use hands and fingers for keyboard use, CAD modeling, documentation, analysis, drawing review, and standard engineering tasks
  • Ability to review drawings, models, specifications, test data, design documentation, reports, and computer screens for extended periods
  • Ability to communicate by phone, email, video meeting, and in person throughout the workday
  • Ability to occasionally stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout office, engineering, lab, production, or testing areas as needed
  • Ability to work with mechanical assemblies, prototypes, tooling, test equipment, engineering hardware, and related components as needed
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, or move standard office materials, engineering supplies, hardware components, or test materials as needed
  • Ability to wear required PPE and follow all site, engineering, production, lab, testing, and safety procedures
  • Ability to maintain accuracy, focus, and attention to detail while supporting engineering design, testing, and analysis work


Salary Range: $120,000 to $190,000/year
