Lead Engineer - Plant SCADA

The Lead Engineer will be able to develop and implement logic for assigned project tasks. Normal day-to-day responsibilities include client and contractor coordination, logic development & testing. The Lead Engineer will ensure tasks are completed on time and within budget, mentoring and collaboration with engineering teams is essential to ensure system compatibility and enhance SCADA efficiency.

- Review and create, maintain, and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and other project documentation, providing learning opportunities for junior team members.
- Review, design, test, integrate PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and HMI/SCADA systems for renewable energy automation applications while providing learning opportunities for junior team members.
- Perform and review the work for the PV, BESS, and integration of substation systems and devices, including protective relays, RTACs (Real-Time Automation Controllers), and communication networks.
- Lead FAT, SAT testing, and mentor junior team members to troubleshoot electrical control systems to ensure proper functionality and performance.
- Oversee and perform on-site field commissioning activities, such as system installation, device power-up, and network troubleshooting.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure project success.
- Assist others in obtaining up-to-date knowledge and ensure adherence to relevant industry standards and safety regulations, including NERC CIP.
- Help others learn and understand new technologies and programming techniques.
- Leading large technical and multidisciplinary projects.
- Maintains positive client relationships, responsive both internally and externally, with frequent client interaction.
- Takes ownership of personnel and project quality.
- Additional duties may include tasks beyond what is listed, such as special projects, assisting colleagues, or new initiatives. A willingness to adapt to changing priorities and support team efforts enhances collaboration and growth opportunities.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, electronic, electrical engineering technology, or a closely related discipline; equivalent professional experience may be considered in place of a degree.
- Advanced experience applying electrical systems, control systems, and automation concepts.
- 6+ years in Industrial Control Systems, DCS platforms, advanced experience with PLC programming and HMI design, development, and commissioning.
- Efficiency in more than one programming language (Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram, or Structured Text).
- Demonstrated experience designing and/or troubleshooting fiber optic networks.
- Strong experience interpreting electrical schematics, including single-line diagrams and P&C drawings.
- Proven application of automation, integration, and system protection principles.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to mentor others in a technical field.
- Strong experience with more than one PLC platform (e.g. Schneider Electric, SEL RTAC, Allen Bradley).
- Strong understanding of common industrial communications protocols including Modbus TCP, OPC UA/DA and/or DNP3.
- Strong understanding of 3-phase power generation control principles.
- Strong knowledge of implementing Automatic Voltage Regulation Schemes including setpoint, power factor, and voltage control.
- Core/Gold Certification in Inductive Automation's Ignition platform is preferred.
- Strong experience with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and related technologies is nice to have.
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity in industrial control systems is preferred.
- Strong experience tuning PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) control loops is desirable.
- Knowledge in Renewable energy industry exposure – Wind, PV, BESS is a nice to have.
- Ability to read, interpret, and implement Power Purchase Agreements and LGIAs and translate into control schemes.
- Knowledge and understanding of voltage regulation concepts and ISO specific requirements.
- Demonstrates openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement.
- Demonstrates excellent verbal/written communication, time management, interpersonal, and organizational skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, and clients.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines by setting priorities
- Ability to work in a hybrid mode schedule; 3 days in the office, 2 days from home.
- Must possess strong verbal and written English communication skills (CEFR level B2–C1). You should be comfortable articulating complex ideas and collaborating effectively within a global professional environment.
- Willing to travel 15-20% of the time.
- Willing to work night shift and weekends based on project schedule (less than 10% of the time).
- Must possess a valid Costa Rica Driver’s license.
- Must have the ability to travel across the United States and Canada, 15-20% of the time.
- Must have authorization to work legally in Costa Rica for any employer.
