Senior Embedded Software Engineer

Location: San Francisco, CA (On-site)

Employment Type: Full-time

About the Role

Join a high-growth connected hardware and health-tech company as a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to design, build, and scale current and next-generation smart consumer hardware products. You will join a small, agile engineering team with high levels of autonomy to ship firmware and system software directly to an active global fleet of IoT devices.

What You'll Help Build

  • Embedded Linux Development: Design, develop, and maintain core system software, including systemd services, kernel modules, and low-level firmware for connected smart devices.
  • Platform Security Engineering: Own security architecture across the embedded Linux platform spanning boot, OS, and runtime services.
  • Secure Boot & Chain of Trust: Implement and maintain end-to-end secure boot flows, including image signing, cryptographic key management/provisioning, and anti-rollback/version control mechanisms.
  • Device Trust & Fleet Security: Build and operate device trust primitives and drive platform-wide security best practices across all connected devices in production.
  • Manufacturing & Global Deployment: Partner with cross-functional and overseas manufacturing teams (including contract manufacturers in Asia) to develop factory line tests and ensure seamless production rollouts.
  • Software Excellence: Champion high standards in system reliability, defensive programming, and thorough technical documentation.

What You'll Need to Succeed

  • 5+ years of professional experience in embedded systems, firmware, and system software development using C/C++.
  • Deep hands-on expertise in Embedded Linux ecosystems, including Yocto Project, BitBake, systemd, and Linux kernel/driver development.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in secure software development lifecycles for IoT and connected hardware platforms.
  • Proven track record optimizing compute workloads and memory footprints in resource-constrained environments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally as needed to support factory manufacturing and product bring-up.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Practical experience implementing hardware-enforced secure boot on Linux devices (cryptographic signing, HSM/secure element provisioning, and anti-rollback).
  • Hands-on experience with OP-TEE / Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), including developing/deploying Trusted Applications (TAs) and integrating secure services with Linux user-space.
  • Experience with wireless communication protocols and stacks (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE).
  • Strong problem-solving mindset with experience delivering iterative solutions in a fast-paced hardware environment.
