Role Description
The Junior Infrastructure Engineer is a full-time remote position designed for an individual who is looking to develop their career in IT infrastructure, networking, cloud technologies, and systems administration.
The role will support senior infrastructure engineers with the day-to-day administration, monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintenance of client and internal technology environments.
Responsibilities may include assisting with Windows and Linux servers, Active Directory and Microsoft 365 administration, networking, virtualization, backups, system monitoring, patching, documentation, and basic security configurations.
The Junior Infrastructure Engineer will also participate in infrastructure projects, troubleshooting activities, system deployments, and technical assessments while learning established processes and best practices from senior members of the team.
This position is ideal for someone with a strong technical foundation, curiosity, willingness to learn, and an interest in developing hands-on experience across multiple areas of IT infrastructure.
Compensation
Competitive salary ranging from $38,000 to $42,000 annually, based on experience, skills, and qualifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with troubleshooting server, network, cloud, and end-user infrastructure issues.
- Support Windows Server and Microsoft 365 administration tasks.
- Assist with Active Directory user accounts, groups, permissions, DNS, and related services.
- Monitor infrastructure systems, alerts, backups, and system performance.
- Assist with server updates, patching, maintenance, and routine administrative tasks.
- Support basic network troubleshooting involving TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching, and connectivity.
- Assist with firewall, VPN, and network security configurations under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Participate in virtualization and cloud infrastructure tasks.
- Document troubleshooting steps, configurations, changes, and technical findings.
- Assist senior engineers with infrastructure deployments, migrations, assessments, and other technical projects.
- Follow established security practices, change procedures, and documentation standards.
- Escalate complex technical issues when appropriate while continuing to participate in the troubleshooting process.
- Communicate clearly with team members and, when necessary, with clients regarding technical issues and progress.
Qualifications
- Strong interest in IT infrastructure, networking, cloud technologies, and cybersecurity.
- Basic understanding of Windows desktop and/or Windows Server environments.
- Foundational understanding of networking concepts such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching, VLANs, and VPNs.
- Basic knowledge of system administration concepts including users, groups, permissions, updates, and system monitoring.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Ability and willingness to research technical issues and learn new technologies.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to document technical work clearly and accurately.
- Ability to manage assigned tasks and work effectively in a remote environment.
- Willingness to ask questions, accept guidance, and learn from senior technical staff.
Preferred Qualifications
The following experience is beneficial but not required:
- Exposure to Microsoft 365, Azure, or Entra ID.
- Familiarity with Active Directory and Windows Server.
- Experience with VMware, Hyper-V, or other virtualization technologies.
- Basic experience with firewalls, switches, wireless networks, or VPN technologies.
- Exposure to Fortinet, UniFi, SonicWall, or similar networking/security platforms.
- Familiarity with backup and monitoring platforms.
- Exposure to PowerShell, Bash, Python, or other scripting and automation tools.
- Previous Help Desk, Technical Support, MSP, internship, or IT support experience.
- CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Microsoft, Cisco, Fortinet, or similar certifications.
A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Networking, Cybersecurity, or a related field is beneficial but not required. Equivalent hands-on experience, certifications, personal projects, labs, or demonstrated technical knowledge will also be considered.
