Duration: 12+ Months Contract

Visa: USC, GC, GC EAD

Interview Mode: Video

Job Description:

Focus: Sustaining Engineering | Hardware & Software | Retail Technology

About the Role

We are seeking a Sustaining Engineer to support released HP Retail Peripheral products and troubleshoot technical issues that arise after launch.

This is a highly hands-on engineering role focused on root-cause analysis, troubleshooting, testing, validation, and resolving customer and field escalations across hardware, firmware, drivers, software, and compatibility.

You will work closely with HP engineering teams, suppliers, manufacturing partners, and customers to investigate issues, identify root causes, validate fixes, and drive problems through resolution.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the technical owner for assigned sustaining issues across HP retail peripheral products.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, firmware, drivers, software, and compatibility issues.
  • Recreate customer environments to reproduce and diagnose problems.
  • Perform detailed root-cause and failure analysis across hardware and software.
  • Conduct hands-on testing, validation, regression testing, and interoperability testing.
  • Perform hardware teardowns and investigate electrical, mechanical, power, cabling, and interface-related issues.
  • Investigate and resolve customer, field, factory, service, and quality escalations.
  • Work with ODMs, suppliers, contract manufacturers, and internal engineering teams to drive corrective actions.
  • Validate firmware, driver, and software fixes before release.
  • Support product launches and release readiness activities.
  • Analyze quality and field data to identify trends and prevent repeat issues.
  • Track multiple technical escalations and provide clear status, risks, next steps, and resolution timelines.
  • Support product lifecycle activities, including engineering changes, component changes, documentation, service parts, and end-of-life activities.
  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations to engineering, project management, suppliers, and customer-facing teams.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience in sustaining engineering, product engineering, systems engineering, hardware engineering, or a similar role.
  • Strong root-cause analysis and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience working across both hardware and software.
  • Hands-on experience testing, debugging, validating, or troubleshooting electronic products.
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot the interaction between hardware, firmware, drivers, and software.
  • Experience working with customer environments, field issues, or product escalations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple issues simultaneously and drive them through resolution.
  • Experience working with suppliers, manufacturing partners, quality teams, or engineering organizations.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with HP products or HP's engineering organization.
  • Retail engineering or point-of-sale (POS) experience.
  • Experience with retail peripherals such as receipt printers, barcode scanners, cash drawers, displays, keyboards, MSRs, or related devices.
  • Experience with firmware, device drivers, embedded systems, SDKs, or device utilities.
  • Experience with Windows, Windows IoT, Linux, Android, or other retail operating environments.
  • Experience with ODMs, contract manufacturers, or third-party technology suppliers.
  • Experience with product launches, NPI, validation, or engineering change processes.
  • Software development/programming experience is a plus, but not required.

Role Breakdown

  • 80% Engineering / 20% Project Management
  • Hands-on troubleshooting and technical investigation
  • Approximately 3–5 active sustaining escalations at a time
  • Customer-facing and supplier-facing interaction
  • Strong focus on post-launch product support and root-cause analysis

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys taking a complex product problem apart—literally and technically—to figure out what is actually going wrong.

You should be comfortable moving between hardware and software, recreating issues, testing different scenarios, performing teardowns when necessary, identifying the root cause, and working with the right teams or suppliers to implement and validate the fix.

This is not a traditional project management role. The priority is hands-on engineering expertise and the ability to solve difficult sustaining issues.
