About the Role
We are looking for an experienced PostgreSQL Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) / Senior DBA to take ownership of the reliability, performance, and scalability of our PostgreSQL databases running on Amazon Aurora and Amazon RDS.
You will be the go-to PostgreSQL expert, working closely with our DevOps and Backend teams to optimize database performance, improve reliability, guide database architecture, and ensure our systems remain stable as data volumes and traffic grow.
This is a highly specialized role focused on the database layer. Our DevOps team manages the underlying AWS infrastructure, while our Backend teams handle application development and queries.
Key Responsibilities
- Optimize PostgreSQL internals and database configuration, including memory management, WAL settings, autovacuum, and other performance-related parameters.
- Manage vacuum, transaction ID wraparound, table/index bloat, and database maintenance in production environments.
- Monitor and optimize database connections and connection pooling in collaboration with the DevOps team, using solutions such as Amazon RDS Proxy or PgBouncer.
- Monitor database performance using AWS Performance Insights, CloudWatch, pg_stat_statements, auto_explain, and other observability tools.
- Analyze execution plans and work closely with Backend Engineers to identify performance bottlenecks, inefficient joins, missing indexes, locking issues, and other database-related problems.
- Provide guidance on advanced PostgreSQL database design, including partitioning, GIN/GiST indexes, JSONB optimization, and indexing strategies.
- Design and implement data archiving and retention strategies for large datasets ranging from hundreds of gigabytes to terabytes.
- Manage PostgreSQL replication, including logical replication, replication slots, replica lag, and integrations with data warehouses.
- Act as the Tier-3 escalation point for database-related production incidents.
- Diagnose and resolve complex issues such as deadlocks, long-running transactions, blocking DDL operations, replication problems, and unexpected CPU or resource spikes.
- Work with DevOps and Backend teams to establish database best practices and improve overall system reliability.
- Contribute to architectural decisions related to database scalability, availability, and performance.
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on experience working with PostgreSQL in production environments.
- Strong understanding of PostgreSQL internals, performance tuning, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Solid experience with Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and Amazon RDS.
- Strong understanding of AWS database concepts, including Aurora storage, failover mechanisms, replication, and Aurora Serverless.
- Experience with PostgreSQL performance analysis and tools such as EXPLAIN ANALYZE, pg_stat_statements, auto_explain, AWS Performance Insights, and CloudWatch.
- Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL indexing, partitioning, vacuum/autovacuum, WAL, replication, locking, and connection management.
- Experience working with large-scale databases and high-traffic production environments.
- Understanding of database reliability, high availability, and incident management.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with Backend and DevOps Engineers.
Nice to Have
- Experience with PgBouncer or Amazon RDS Proxy.
- Experience with pg_repack, pg_squeeze, or similar database maintenance tools.
- Experience with logical replication and data warehouse integrations.
- Experience working with JSONB-heavy PostgreSQL databases.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code environments such as Terraform.
- Experience designing PostgreSQL solutions for large datasets and high-throughput systems.
