This position is based in San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ.
What You'll Do:
Software Engineer Intern: You will have the opportunity to explore how modern applications are developed using Agile methodologies, cloud technologies, APIs, and full-stack engineering practices. You'll contribute to meaningful projects that enhance operational efficiency, strengthen platform reliability, and support modernization efforts across the organization. Under direct supervision and with guidance from senior engineers and your mentor, your day will involve supporting your team in various tasks. You will participate in daily stand-up meetings to understand project progress and team objectives. You may be involved in capturing and analyzing requirements, assisting with the design of software components, writing and testing code for specific features or bug fixes, and helping to document technical solutions. You will participate in code and design reviews, learning best practices and gaining exposure to real-world development processes. You might also assist in responding to production issues or outages, contributing to problem resolution under guidance. The work will be aligned with USAA's technology strategy, potentially involving the use of AI tools and automation to enhance efficiency.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with senior engineers to design, develop, code, and test technical solutions.
- Participate in code and design reviews to understand development standards and best practices.
- Assist in capturing and analyzing requirements for software projects.
- Contribute to the testing and implementation phases of the software development lifecycle.
- Support the resolution of production issues and respond to outages under supervision.
- Help organize work to deliver features and solutions.
- Learn and apply knowledge of AI tools and automation strategies to improve efficiency.
- Create and maintain documentation for technical solutions.
- Gain exposure to Agile methodologies and team collaboration.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Understand business data needs.
- Support the design, development, writing, testing, and deployment of data pipeline code.
- Learn about data management principles, including metadata management, data quality, and data lineage.
- Participate in design and code review sessions for data engineering solutions.
- Assist in troubleshooting and resolving failures in data pipelines.
- Monitor the execution of data pipelines in the production environment.
- Contribute to projects aligned with USAA's EDDT Technology Strategy.
- Learn and apply AI tools and automation strategies to improve efficiency and performance.
- Create and maintain documentation for technical solutions.
- Gain exposure to Agile ceremonies like daily standups.
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Anticipated graduation date between September 2027 and May 2028.
- Foundational understanding of:
- Java or object-oriented programming concepts
- Python
- Data structures and algorithms
- Software development fundamentals
- SQL and database concepts
- Problem-solving and analytical thinking
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership through coursework, projects, student organizations, employment, or community involvement.
- Experience with JavaScript, React, or modern web development frameworks.
- Familiarity with REST APIs.
- Exposure to Git or version control systems.
- Exposure to AWS or other cloud technologies.
- Exposure to Snowflake.
- Coursework or project experience involving software development.
- Understanding of Agile development concepts.
- Familiarity with Git or version control tools.
- Interest in AI-assisted development and emerging technologies.

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $25 - $36. Interns will receive an intern stipend to assist with expenses.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the hourly range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual hourly rate for this role may vary by location.
