Role Permanent
Applied Experience Science Manager
Use experience science to change what gets built, tested and scaled.
About Proposition Science And The Experience Lab
As JTI accelerates its Reduced Risk Products (RRP) ambition, we are building a new science capability at the intersection of product, experience and human understanding Proposition Science. This is your chance to be part of transforming an industry from the inside - placing science at the core of how new products, propositions and experiences are shaped, tested and implemented, and supporting adult consumers in the transition to less harmful choices.
The Experience Lab is one of the operating capabilities of Proposition Science, and its ambition reaches beyond one company we want to help pioneer Experience Science as a discipline. We study the scientific and mechanistic basis of attention, perception, emotion, memory, choice and behaviour, and we turn that understanding into practical guidance for reduced risk propositions, consumer journeys, communications and innovation.
Why does this role exist?
Science that never leaves the lab changes nothing. As Applied Experience Science Manager, you will bring validated experience science into live product, brand, innovation, marketing and consumer journey initiatives - early enough to influence what is designed, not only how it is evaluated.
You will convert ambiguous business questions into clearly defined experience problems and opportunities, select the scientific mechanisms that best explain them, specify the intervention or experience change, design the validation approach and produce a clear decision recommendation. A successful output is not an interesting insight it is a better-defined problem or opportunity, a specified solution, credible outcome evidence and an explicit go, stop or redesign recommendation.
You will do this as an expert individual contributor influencing without formal authority, and drawing on external experts, agencies and research partners to get the evidence the decision needs.
What will you actually do?
- Opportunity framing and problem diagnosis. Engage early in priority initiatives to clarify the business challenge or opportunity, identify where scientific understanding can add value and define science-informed problem and opportunity statements before solutions are locked.
- Science-informed solution development. Translate relevant mechanisms, research findings, models and expert input into practical interventions, experience improvements, communications, features and implementation recommendations.
- Embedded scientific partnership. Work as part of the teams driving each initiative - innovation, product development, marketing or market teams from across the company - throughout development and deployment, challenging unsupported assumptions and ensuring the solution reflects the intended mechanism.
- Testing, validation and applied experimentation. Define success and failure criteria, comparison conditions and measures; design and support the experiments, pilots and validation approaches that show whether solutions work, why, for whom and under which conditions. Make use of novel methods where they genuinely strengthen scientific efficiency, evidence and understanding.
- Recommendation development and learning integration. Recommend whether to proceed, stop or redesign - stating the evidence and its uncertainty - and capture reusable learning and unresolved evidence gaps in the Proposition Science knowledge base.
Above all, you combine scientific depth with pragmatism and follow-through. This is not science for its own sake you engage early, stay involved through implementation, and always keep an eye on the application and outcomes your work is meant to improve.
What skills are we looking for?
- 7+ years of experience applying scientific evidence or human behaviour understanding to real-world business, product, brand, marketing, innovation, service, digital or consumer journey challenges and opportunities.
- A BSc in a relevant applied scientific or research-related field such as behavioural science, psychology, cognitive science, consumer science, experience research, design research, human factors or decision science - or another STEM discipline with significant applied experience. An advanced degree is preferred.
- Proven ability to translate scientific theory, mechanisms and evidence into practical solution directions, interventions, prototypes, experiments or implementation guidance.
- Experience with validation logic, experimental design, pilot design, mixed-method research or evidence-based iteration, with explicit success criteria and decision implications.
- Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and managing external experts, agencies or research partners, ideally in a regulated, science-led or consumer-facing industry.
