Job Description:

Abacus Intel is seeking a Software Engineer I to join its development team and contribute to the technology platforms supporting a publicly traded company. This entry-level position focuses on backend services and the database layer, completing well-defined development tasks under the supervision of senior engineering staff within an assigned product area. The work involves building Python services, designing and tuning relational database schemas and queries, and extending asynchronous data pipelines that process large volumes of sensitive records. The role requires the ability to operate effectively within an Agile development environment, including sprint planning, daily standups, and iterative delivery cycles. It is the foundational level of a structured four-level engineering career framework (Levels I–IV) and is intended for candidates in the early stages of their engineering career who are seeking a defined path for professional growth and advancement.

Responsibilities:

• Build and maintain Python backend services and internal APIs within an assigned product area

• Design, query, and tune PostgreSQL schemas, indexes, and migrations, and write safe, reviewed data migrations

• Extend and monitor asynchronous, queue-based pipelines that ingest, extract, and transform large volumes of records

• Handle sensitive personal and health data in line with regulatory requirements, including encryption, access logging, and retention controls

• Implement audit logging and data lineage so that system outputs can be traced and reproduced

• Write automated tests, participate in code review, and ship through the team's CI/CD pipeline on AWS

• Support ad hoc data requests from internal teams and document recurring issues and resolutions

• Support frontend development in React, including component development, API integration, and UI bug fixes within an assigned product area

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

• Working proficiency in Python, with familiarity in a web framework such as FastAPI, Flask, or Django

• Solid relational database fundamentals: SQL, schema design, indexing, and query performance (PostgreSQL preferred)

• Exposure to asynchronous or queue-based processing such as Celery, SQS, or RabbitMQ

• Familiarity with Git-based version control, code review, and standard software testing practices

• Exposure to cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS, and to CI/CD pipelines

• Strong written communication and the ability to document design decisions clearly

• Exposure to frontend development with React or a similar framework, including consuming REST APIs from the browser
