The Momba Group is assisting our client, who is seeking an experienced Manager, IT Database Administration, to lead a team responsible for the health, performance, security, and reliability of enterprise database platforms. This is a hands-on technical leadership role combining people management, strategic planning, operational excellence, and deep database administration expertise.
The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable leading and developing a high-performing team while serving as a senior technical resource for complex database environments spanning both on-premises and cloud platforms.
Location: Des Moines, IA metro (onsite)
Salary Target: $120,000 - $145,000
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, coach, mentor, and develop a team of Database Administrators.
- Establish priorities, performance expectations, career development plans, and succession strategies.
- Manage staffing, workload planning, resource allocation, and vendor relationships.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
Database Platform Management
- Oversee the availability, performance, security, and reliability of enterprise database environments.
- Serve as the senior escalation point for complex incidents, outages, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis.
- Support and manage multiple database technologies including:
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Oracle
- Snowflake
- MongoDB
- Other enterprise database platforms
Architecture, Security & Compliance
- Establish and maintain standards for:
- Database architecture
- Security and access controls
- Backup and recovery
- High availability and disaster recovery
- Monitoring and alerting
- Data protection and governance
- Partner with Information Security and Risk teams to address vulnerabilities, audits, access management, and compliance requirements.
Modernization & Continuous Improvement
- Lead database upgrades, migrations, cloud initiatives, platform modernization efforts, and consolidation projects.
- Drive automation of provisioning, monitoring, maintenance, patching, and operational processes.
- Develop and maintain monitoring solutions, dashboards, runbooks, and support documentation.
- Evaluate emerging database technologies and recommend strategic improvements.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Collaborate closely with application development, infrastructure, architecture, analytics, integration, and business teams.
- Support enterprise reporting, data movement, ETL/ELT, and related data platform technologies.
- Participate in incident, problem, and change management processes to ensure stable operations and continuous service improvement.
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or equivalent professional experience.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing technology, infrastructure, application support, or database administration teams.
- Demonstrated success leading technical teams and delivering operational excellence.
- Strong understanding of enterprise database administration, architecture, performance tuning, backup and recovery, and security best practices.
- Experience supporting large-scale production database environments.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects, competing priorities, and cross-functional initiatives.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills.
Preferred
- Advanced degree in a technology-related field.
- Experience managing hybrid cloud and on-premises database environments.
- Experience with Azure DevOps or similar work management platforms.
- Knowledge of database automation, infrastructure modernization, and cloud adoption strategies.
- Experience managing third-party vendors, offshore resources, and technology budgets.
