Senior Data Engineer
Indexed description
We are looking for a passionate and experienced data engineering professional who thrives in building modern, scalable, and business-critical data platforms.
We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer who brings real depth in Databricks and Lakehouse patterns. Someone who has done this at enterprise scale and wants to do it again. Here, you will get real architectural ownership: the platform is being modernised now and you will shape the standards.
Flying Tiger Copenhagen is in the middle of a major data platform modernization moving from Azure Synapse to a fully Azure Databricks-native Lakehouse architecture, rolling out market by market across 35+ countries.
This is not a greenfield build and it is not a lift-and-shift. It is a genuine modernization of how a global multi-channel retailer structures, governs, and delivers data to the business. We have a strong programme structure with dedicated Programme Management, Architecture, and a strategic delivery partner already in place, and you would be joining at the point where your decisions shape the platform for years to come.
In the role you will report into our Enterprise Architect and be a part of the Technology department based at our Headquarters in Copenhagen.
Your responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable medallion architecture pipelines (Bronze, Silver, Gold) for both batch and streaming workloads.
- Develop and optimize Spark and Databricks workloads to improve performance, scalability, and cost efficiency.
- Lead performance tuning initiatives using techniques such as: Z-Ordering, Photon, Predicate pushdown, Partitioning strategies, Broadcast joins, Caching and File size optimization.
- Implement governance, security, and data lineage frameworks using Unity Catalog.
- Enable self-service analytics capabilities for business users across the organization.
- Automate deployments and infrastructure through CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps and Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
- Collaborate with Programme Managers on estimation and planning of engineering initiatives.
- Partner with Data Architects and Principal Data Engineers to define the target architecture for the data platform.
- Drive continuous improvements across the overall data landscape and engineering practices.
- Mentor and support colleagues by promoting engineering excellence and best practices.
About you
To succeed in this role, you bring:
- Solid experience within modern Data Engineering and Lakehouse architectures, ideally from enterprise-scale environments.
- Extensive hands-on expertise with Databricks, Apache Spark, and cloud-based data platforms.
- Strong programming capabilities in Python (PySpark) and SQL, with a focus on building robust and maintainable data solutions.
- A deep understanding of data modeling principles, data governance, and scalable data platform design.
- Experience optimizing large-scale data workloads for performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Knowledge of modern DevOps practices, including CI/CD automation and Infrastructure as Code.
- The ability to translate complex technical challenges into practical and business-oriented solutions.
It is an advantage if you also have experience with:
- Experience with MLflow / MLOps practices.
- Azure Synapse Analytics background (useful given the modernisation context).
- Databricks certifications.
- Retail or omnichannel business experience.
As a person you have a proactive mindset with a passion for improving architecture, processes, and engineering standards. You are bringing great collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to mentor and guide colleagues across teams.

We take climate change very seriously and work very hard to minimize our carbon footprint. We do this by buying less plastic and more renewable materials (everything which grows) – and we also want to make sure that all stores are run on renewable energy. We walk the talk – and make sure that what we do is validated by external experts, in the Science Based Targets initiative.
