The Department of Public Health Sciences, housed within the College of Health Sciences, provides high-quality undergraduate and graduate education that prepares the next generation of public health practitioners, leaders, and researchers. Through rigorous coursework, internships, research opportunities, and community engaged activities, students develop the skills and competencies needed to design and implement population-based interventions and contribute to the advancement of public health science. Our academic programs, research endeavors, and community engagement activities place a strong emphasis on Hispanic and border health issues, addressing the unique public health challenges and opportunities of the U.S.-Mexico border region. The Department's Master of Public Health (MPH) program is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), reflecting our commitment to excellence in public health education.
Our faculty members are dedicated educators, accomplished researchers, and committed mentors who bring extensive academic training and professional expertise to the classroom and community. Their research addresses critical public health priorities, including chronic and infectious disease prevention, health promotion and education, maternal and child health, nutrition, environmental health, substance use, and health disparities. Students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels are actively engaged in faculty-led research projects, providing valuable opportunities to develop research skills, gain practical experience, and contribute to impactful scholarship that advances public health practice and improves population health outcomes.
The Department of Public Health Sciences is committed to achieving regional and national prominence at the intersection of Health Informatics, Healthcare Administration and AI-driven public health technologies. To advance this vision, we seek an established national or internationally recognized scholar who will accelerate this trajectory.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities.
- Develop and sustain an independent, externally funded research program in health informatics with particular emphasis on artificial intelligence applications, population health analytics, digital health innovations, and public health technology;
- Develop, deliver, and assess effective instruction of a concentration in health informatics;
- Provide academic advising/mentoring to graduate students;
- Foster and sustain interdisciplinary collaborations across the College of Health Sciences and throughout UTEP, leveraging expertise from multiple disciplines to address complex healthcare and public health challenges;
- Engage in service to the profession and community; and
- Other duties as assigned.
- PhD or equivalent degree in health informatics, health technology, health systems sciences, healthcare administration, or closely related discipline
- Experience in teaching health informatics and technology to graduate students
- Evidence of scholarship in the field of expertise
- Experience in the development of grant proposals
- Minimum qualifications for Assistant Professor in addition to:
- Experience with health information systems, interoperability standards, or applied AI in public health or clinical settings;
- Emerging or established regional or national reputation at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor
- An accomplished research portfolio demonstrating a sustained record of peer-reviewed publications and successful acquisition of extramural grant funding from federal, state, or foundation sources
- Established partnerships with government agencies, healthcare organizations, or industry.
- A research interest that complements public health strengths
