An exciting opportunity to build software, integrate AI and drive data engineering for real-world water and environmental challenges as part of WRM’s highly respected team of specialist engineers.


The role

Our data and automation engineer role offers excellent opportunities for growth and progression in a dynamic, technically focused environment. This opportunity is open to applicants from graduate up to senior level, commensurate with experience.

  • Deliver high-value digital and data solutions to support complex water resource projects in the resource, infrastructure, development, government and insurance sectors
  • Bridge engineering, data and technology by translating water and environment problems into robust workflows, models, software and client deliverables across modelling, data analysis, reporting and internal business systems
  • Apply systems engineering thinking by understanding user needs, data flows, technical constraints and integration points, and helping design practical, maintainable systems that support project delivery and business improvement
  • Work alongside specialist water engineers to develop and improve tools and automation using programming, AI and analytics for greater technical quality, efficiency and consistency across project delivery
  • Guide technology work from concept to delivery, including scoping requirements, testing outputs, documenting solutions and supporting adoption by engineers and business users

The role can be full or part time, based in Brisbane, Melbourne or Darwin, with flexible working arrangements.


About you

The ideal candidate is an experienced and motivated engineer or data specialist, with strong problem solving and programming capability, and an interest in applying data, automation, AI and systems engineering principles to complex challenges.

  • Completed (or completing) degree in engineering, data science, computer science, or a related field
  • Strong capability in Python and coding applications, including developing reliable and structured scripts and tools for technical users
  • Experience working with engineering, environmental or spatial datasets, including data transformation, analysis, quality control and visualisation
  • Familiarity with spatial, terrain or modelling software packages such as QGIS, 12D, Civil 3D, or demonstrated ability to learn new technical platforms quickly
  • Interest in practical AI applications, including automation, knowledge management, model interrogation, reporting support, workflow improvement and responsible use of AI tools
  • Ability to think across systems, including users, processes, data, software, integrations and technical workflows
  • Ability to scope, coordinate and deliver technology work, including requirements gathering, testing, documentation, stakeholder communication and continuous improvement
  • Excellent critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills
  • Keen to collaborate, share knowledge and build capability in a culture of technical excellence.
