SQL Server Migration Specialist

Work Arrangement: Hybrid – 4 days onsite / 1 day remote

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced SQL Server Migration Specialist to support a comprehensive database modernization initiative, migrating a legacy SQL Server 2016 environment to SQL Server 2022.

This is a hands-on technical role requiring strong experience with SQL Server migrations, SSRS, SSIS, Azure Data Factory, and SQL development. The consultant will take ownership of multiple migration workstreams, including migrating and validating reporting services, integration packages, and associated database components.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, troubleshooting complex migration issues, and ensuring migrated systems are thoroughly tested and production-ready.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute the migration of SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) reports from SQL Server 2016 to SQL Server 2022, including testing, troubleshooting, and validation.
• Migrate and optimize SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services) packages for the SQL Server 2022 environment.
• Assess existing SSIS packages and redesign/migrate applicable integrations to Azure Data Factory (ADF).
• Develop and maintain custom scripts and utilities using VB.NET and/or C#.NET to support migration and post-migration activities.
• Develop and optimize complex queries and stored procedures using T-SQL and PL/SQL.
• Perform comprehensive testing and validation to ensure data integrity, system functionality, and successful migration outcomes.
• Troubleshoot migration issues across database, reporting, and integration components.
• Document migration procedures, configurations, technical decisions, and lessons learned.
• Manage multiple migration workstreams independently while maintaining clear communication with technical and business stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional experience with SQL Server administration, development, and/or database migration projects.
• Strong hands-on experience with SQL Server 2016 and SQL Server 2022.
• Demonstrated experience migrating SSRS reports in production environments.
• Demonstrated experience migrating and troubleshooting SSIS packages.
• Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory and cloud-based data integration.
• Strong proficiency with T-SQL and PL/SQL development and query optimization.
• Programming experience with VB.NET and/or C#.NET.
• Experience planning, executing, testing, and validating database migrations.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of complex technical workstreams.
• Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work onsite in Burlington, NC four days per week.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with SQL Server 2019 or other intermediate SQL Server versions.
• Familiarity with Azure SQL Database and additional Azure data services.
• Experience with data warehousing and/or business intelligence platforms.
• Experience with migration tools such as SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) or comparable migration utilities.
• Microsoft SQL Server and/or Azure certifications.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work at a workstation for extended periods.
• Ability to stand, walk, and navigate office and data center environments.
• Ability to lift and move computer equipment, servers, and peripherals weighing up to 50 pounds when required.
• Ability to work in climate-controlled server/data center environments and perform standard keyboard and mouse-based tasks.
