Data Architect / Engineer – AWS, Data & AI
Indexed description
Remote – Europe | Full-time | Contract
Cloudworkz is looking for an experienced Data Architect / Engineer to join our growing Data & AI capability and work alongside AWS teams on complex cloud, data and AI engagements across Europe.
This is a broad, T-shaped role for someone who can move comfortably between architecture and hands-on engineering — from discovery and target architecture through to building production-ready data platforms, pipelines and increasingly AI-enabled solutions.
We are looking for someone who can assess, design and deliver, working closely with AWS architects, customer engineering teams and business stakeholders.
- Design and build modern AWS data platforms, working across services such as S3, Glue, Lake Formation, Athena, Redshift, Kinesis/MSK and Step Functions/Airflow.
- Architect and engineer scalable data lakes, pipelines, streaming and analytics solutions, supported by strong data modelling practices.
- Build repeatable infrastructure and data delivery patterns using Terraform or AWS CDK.
- Work with Databricks on AWS where appropriate as we continue developing our Databricks partnership and capability.
- Contribute to AI and GenAI solutions using Amazon Bedrock, including RAG patterns, knowledge bases, agents and guardrails.
- Work with technologies such as OpenSearch or pgvector for retrieval-based architectures and SageMaker for traditional ML lifecycle requirements.
- Consider model evaluation, operational performance and cost control as part of production AI solution design.
- Use AI-assisted engineering tools such as Amazon Q and Kiro as part of the delivery workflow.
- Apply a hyperautomation mindset — not only automating customer solutions, but continuously looking for ways to automate and accelerate the delivery process itself.
- Run discovery and use-case shaping sessions, contribute to estimates and scope, and translate requirements into practical architectures and delivery plans.
- Work in co-delivery with AWS Professional Services and customer teams, rather than operating as an isolated delivery silo.
- Communicate effectively with both engineering and business stakeholders.
We are looking for someone with strong practical experience across several of the following areas:
Data & Cloud Engineering
AWS data services • S3 • Glue • Lake Formation • Athena • Redshift • Kinesis/MSK • Step Functions/Airflow • Data modelling • Python/SQL • Infrastructure as Code • Terraform/CDK
Experience with Databricks, Spark/PySpark, Kafka and modern lakehouse architectures would be particularly valuable.
AI & GenAI
Hands-on familiarity with Amazon Bedrock, RAG architectures, vector/search technologies such as OpenSearch or pgvector, and/or SageMaker.
You should be comfortable thinking beyond the model itself — including evaluation, guardrails, operationalisation and cost.
Awareness of responsible AI and EU AI Act expectations is valuable, particularly for work with regulated customers.
Consulting & Delivery
This role requires more than technical depth.
We value people who can:
- Lead technical discovery and architecture conversations.
- Shape use cases into deliverable solutions.
- Estimate and scope technical work.
- Explain complex decisions clearly to customers.
- Take ownership from architecture through implementation.
- Work effectively alongside AWS and customer engineering teams.
- Operate comfortably in complex enterprise environments.
Experience in regulated industries such as Financial Services or Pharma would be an advantage.
Certifications aren't an absolute requirement, but relevant AWS credentials may differentiate candidates.
Particularly relevant are:
- AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate
- AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate or Professional
We value demonstrated delivery capability above certification alone.
The profile that will thrive here
You are equally comfortable designing the architecture and getting into the engineering required to make it work.
You naturally look for repeatable patterns and automation rather than solving the same problem twice.
You are comfortable being paired with senior AWS architects and engineers, challenging ideas constructively and contributing as part of a joint team.
And you enjoy the consulting side of engineering: understanding the customer's problem, shaping the right solution and remaining accountable through delivery.
- Remote, based in Europe
- Full-time
- Permanent or contract
- Initial client assignment expected to be approximately six months
- Ability to start at short notice
- Existing and independent right to work in your country of residence
- Able to travel across Europe, particularly the Nordics
- Travel required occasionally, but not routinely
- Visa sponsorship is not available
- Fluent English required
At Cloudworkz, we work on complex enterprise cloud and data transformation alongside customers and strategic technology partners.
Our model combines senior engineering, automation and embedded execution. We want people who can take genuine ownership, work collaboratively with customer and partner teams, and turn architecture into working solutions.
For this role in particular, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to the continued development of our AWS and Databricks capabilities, while helping us expand how Data, AI and GenAI become part of the solutions we deliver.
Interested? We'd love to hear from experienced Data Architects and Engineers who want to stay close to both architecture and hands-on delivery.
