Overall purpose of the role

The Business Intelligence Lead will support the organisation’s use of Power BI and other business intelligence tools to turn data into clear, useful information that supports operational and organisational decision-making across United Response.

Working closely with colleagues across the organisation and a third-party data engineering partner, the post holder will develop and maintain Power BI reporting, help define reporting and data requirements, and support the development of structured and reusable datasets for self-service reporting.

This is a hands-on technical role with a strong focus on Power BI, reporting and data analysis. The post holder will work with teams to understand their reporting needs, improve the quality and consistency of reporting, and help colleagues make better use of data. They will also support improvements in data literacy, data quality and the use of common definitions and measures.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain BI solutions using Power BI, including datasets, dataflows, reports and dashboards, following good practice in usability, accessibility and maintainability.

• Work with teams across United Response to understand and document business, data and reporting requirements.

• Work with the organisation’s third-party data engineering partner to help translate reporting requirements into data requirements for the central data platform.

• Build and maintain semantic models and structured reporting datasets that support consistent reporting and appropriate self-service use.

• Maintain reporting assets in the Power BI Service, including workspaces, datasets, apps and access permissions, supporting performance, reliability and security.

• Support colleagues to move from spreadsheet-based reporting to agreed Power BI reports and datasets where appropriate.

• Produce clear analysis and insight to support operational and organisational decision-making.

• Support the development of consistent organisational definitions, measures and reporting standards, working with data owners and subject matter experts.

• Act as a BI and reporting subject matter expert within projects and multidisciplinary teams, providing practical advice and delivery support.

• Support colleagues to build confidence in using and interpreting data through guidance, coaching and knowledge sharing.

• Support data quality, governance and assurance activity, including identifying and escalating data quality issues that affect reporting.

• Maintain appropriate documentation for reports, datasets, measures and reporting processes.

Key Competencies

Essential:

• Strong hands-on experience of designing and delivering Power BI solutions, including datasets, dataflows, reports, dashboards and DAX.

• Experience of designing, publishing and maintaining Power BI apps and managing reporting content in the Power BI Service.

• Working knowledge of SQL and experience using data from a range of systems and sources for reporting and analysis.

• Experience working with data or engineering colleagues to define data and reporting requirements.

• Ability to gather requirements and translate them into clear, practical reporting solutions.

• Ability to explain data and reporting concepts clearly to non-specialist audiences.

• Experience supporting colleagues to use data, reports and BI tools effectively.

• Good understanding of reporting design principles, semantic models, data security, performance and usability.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with good attention to detail.

• Good planning and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage competing pieces of work.

• A collaborative approach and commitment to United Response’s values and mission.

Desirable:

• Experience working in the charity, care or education sectors.

• Familiarity with enterprise data platforms such as Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse,or similar.

• Experience supporting the development of a centralised data platform or common reporting datasets.

• Understanding of data governance, data quality and master data principles.

• Experience of supporting self-service reporting and improving data literacy.

Qualifications

Relevant qualifications are desirable but not essential where the candidate can demonstrate strong practical experience and a track record of delivery.

Examples include:

• Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst certification or equivalent

• Degree or equivalent experience in Data, Information Systems, Business Analytics or a related field

• Training in data visualisation, data storytelling or dashboard design

• Training in data governance or data management

Work Environment

This is a hybrid role, primarily home-based, with occasional travel required for meetings, workshops and team days.
