Public Works Inspector

Job Summary

The City of Corsicana is seeking a qualified individual to fill the role of Public Works Inspector. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with engineering plans, specifications, codes, and regulations on public works projects, including roads, utilities, drainage, and other infrastructure improvements; responds to questions and concerns from the public, contractors, and businesses. This role involves field inspections, documentation, and coordination with contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure quality control and adherence to project standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides inspections for City and Public construction projects within the right of way.
  • Make sure that contractors follow the City regulations and codes and are within specifications for the project.
  • Make routine inspections to ensure that all City designs and specs are followed.
  • Provides right of way inspections for permits.
  • Reviews plans and attends meetings related to various construction projects.
  • Assists with preparation of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and contracts with consultants, contractors, and vendors.
  • Attends pre-construction and progress meetings for city projects.
  • Examines finished installations for conformity to standard and approves installation.
  • Interprets plans and specifications for Contractor and discusses deviations from specified construction procedures to ensure compliance with regulations governing construction.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This is a multi-leveled position and the responsibilities are dependent upon which class you occupy.

Public Works Inspector I: This is the first of two levels in a series of Public Works Inspectors. Receives general supervision from Public Works Inspector II and Director of Public Works. Exercises no direct supervision.

Public Works Inspector II: This is the second of two levels in a series of Public Works Inspectors. The Public Works Inspector II position receives general supervision from the Director of Public Works.

Education & Experience

Public Works Inspector I

  • High school graduate or GED is required.
  • Minimum three (3) years of increasingly responsible construction experience is preferred.

Public Works Inspector II

  • High school Diploma or GED is required. A college degree in construction management, engineering or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years of increasingly responsible construction inspection experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Technical or professional proficiency and a general understanding of related principles and theories of water and sewage systems, construction management, and civil engineering as applicable to a municipal setting.
  • Knowledge of NCTCOG testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of construction materials used in water and sewer lines, pump stations, wells and tanks is required.
  • Considerable skill in arriving at cost estimates on complex projects.
  • Ability to use computers and other related office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with employees, consultants, other governmental agency representatives, City officials and the general public.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Working conditions are in an office and field environment including construction sites involving pervasive hazards associated with heavy equipment and tool operations; speeding traffic; loud and constant noise; and regular exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, and combustible materials. Required to work outdoors on varied and often unstable terrain involving exposure to varying weather conditions of extreme hot and cold temperatures. Position requires regular in-person attendance including evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Maintain a 100% drug- and alcohol-free workplace
  • Pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
  • Be subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment
  • Have and maintain a valid Texas Motor Vehicle Driver’s License
  • Maintain a satisfactory driving record
  • Demonstrate regular attendance and punctuality
  • Successfully complete a one-year probationary period
  • Pass a criminal history check, background investigation, and drug screening to be considered for employment
