Shift: 6:30am-5:00 pm

Unit Overview

The Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) within Surgical Services at Henry Ford Jackson is a specialized, high-acuity surgical environment focused on the care of cardiac and vascular patients in a Level II Trauma setting. The team supports a wide range of complex procedures, including open vascular, endovascular, CABG, and valve surgeries, operating under a 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio. CVOR nurses function primarily as circulating nurses, coordinating all aspects of patient care during procedures—maintaining the sterile field, supporting the surgical and anesthesia teams, monitoring patient status, and ensuring readiness of equipment and supplies in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.

The department is a close-knit team of approximately 12 members who operate with a strong sense of collaboration and mutual support, creating a “family-like” culture where teamwork, anticipation, and accountability are essential. Staff receive a structured 3–6-month orientation tailored to their experience level. This unit is ideal for experienced nurses seeking advanced surgical expertise in a highly specialized field while working in a supportive, team-driven environment.

Provides clinical leadership in the coordination and delivery of high-quality, compassionate patient care in the cardiovascular operating room environment. Utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide, delegate, supervise, and document comprehensive care and patient/family education. Communicates pertinent clinical information effectively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team and actively participates in identifying and implementing solutions to optimize patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess patient needs systematically and develop individualized, evidence-based nursing care plans specific to cardiac and vascular surgical procedures
  • Delegate and supervise nursing tasks appropriately while maintaining accountability for quality patient care delivery
  • Document patient care activities, clinical observations, and interventions accurately and in a timely manner in accordance with facility standards
  • Evaluate patient outcomes against established care plan goals and adjust interventions as needed
  • Communicate clinical information clearly and professionally with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated care
  • Identify variances from expected patient outcomes and collaborate with the healthcare team to implement corrective solutions
  • Provide patient and family education regarding surgical procedures, post-operative expectations, and discharge instructions
  • Prioritize multiple patient care needs efficiently in the fast-paced surgical environment while maintaining quality standards

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; if holding an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), commitment to enroll in an accredited BSN program within 3 years of hire date and completion within 5 years of hire date
  • Minimum of 2 years of direct cardiac and/or vascular nursing experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in assessing complex patient needs and developing evidence-based nursing care plans
  • Proven ability to evaluate patient outcomes and communicate clinical information effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams

  • Experience in perioperative or cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) environments
