Summary

Responsible for the design, implementation, configuration, maintenance, and support of city-wide voice, data, video networks, and Unified Communications. This role leads the installation, administration, and optimization of critical enterprise network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and VPN services.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as a technical project lead and provides advanced guidance to customers and IT staff;
  • Provides expert-level network administration and escalation support for end users;
  • Serves as the subject matter expert (SME) in enterprise network design, hardware and software technology evaluation, and implementation strategies;
  • Adheres to established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval, and success of changes made to the network infrastructure;
  • Collaborates with the information security team to select, implement, and manage security tools, policies, and secure network perimeters;
  • Drives continuous improvement in the delivery of customer services and departmental performance;
  • Architects, maintains, and supports high-availability IT communication systems and underlying infrastructure;
  • Analyzes network telemetry and operational data to develop growth and integration plans that manage present and future IT operations;
  • Partners with city departments to translate business and customer needs into functional network requirements documentation;
  • Performs related duties as directed.

Qualifications

Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems, or a related field. Requires a minimum of FIVE years of experience in an enterprise-level networking environment.

Job-related networking certifications are required. Candidates must possess at least two of the following certifications (or recognized industry equivalents): CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA or CCNP, Extreme Certified Professional (ECP), Extreme Certified Expert (ECE), or Palo Alto Networks Certified Network Security Engineer (PCNSE), or equivalent experience and/or education.

Physical Exam Required

  • Critical Infrastructure: This position has been determined to have close contact with, or control of Critical Infrastructure components. This position is subject to extensive background checks and random drug screening. ***
  • No Class B Misdemeanor convictions within last 10 years***
  • No Class A Misdemeanor, Felony Convictions or Family Violence Conviction***

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge Of

  • City organization, operations, policies, and procedures;
  • Current IT industry best practices governing the delivery of technology-based services;
  • Deep knowledge of enterprise networking protocols and architecture (BGP, EVPN, OSPF, IPsec, 802.1x);
  • Principles and practices of technology management, service delivery life cycles, infrastructure system development, project planning, security, and systems integration in a public sector environment;
  • Hands-on experience with Extreme Networks and Fabric automation (including CLI), Juniper, Cisco, Ubiquiti, Siemens networking equipment, and Palo Alto Next-Generation Firewalls;
  • Network integration requirements for enterprise environments, including virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware), SIEM log ingestion, and physical access control systems.

Ability To

  • Communicate effectively using a variety of methods and devices;
  • Work under pressure and meet deadlines in a dynamic, high-availability environment;
  • Plan and organize workload, accomplishing tasks with minimal supervision;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with customers, vendors, and co-workers;
  • Learn new concepts quickly and successfully translate complex technical concepts to non-technical professionals;
  • Successfully pass a CJIS criminal history background investigation.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds;
  • Frequently bend and kneel during the shift;
  • Frequently pull and push objects;
  • Frequently flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially at the knees;
  • Frequently rotate upper trunk to the left or right while sitting or standing;
  • Place arms above, at, or below shoulder height.
