Director of Client Services
Indexed description
As Director of Client Services, you'll own the health and growth of our entire client portfolio. You'll hold the account leadership on key accounts, directly manage and develop our account management team, and own the systems that make excellent client work repeatable.
This is a seat on our leadership team. You'll represent the client side of the business in the room where company decisions get made.
We need someone who can sit across from a client's CEO on Tuesday, rebuild how we report to every client on Wednesday, and find both genuinely interesting.
Why this role now
We have ambitious growth goals, and the path to reaching them runs directly through client services. Client retention, account growth, and the quality of what we deliver are key to the success of the agency.
This is a new position, and it gives client services a dedicated owner for the first time. The client work is strong, the relationships are real, and the team is good. What it needs now is someone whose whole job is making it better.
What you will actually own
Four things, in roughly this order of importance.
The portfolio. Retention, growth, and client health across 45 accounts ranging between $4,500 and $20,000 in monthly recurring revenue. When a relationship is drifting, you see it before the client says it, and you fix it before it becomes a renewal conversation. When a client has a problem we could solve and has not asked us to, you make that connection. You own retention as a number.
The team. You manage our three account managers directly, each carrying 10-15 accounts. That means real management: development, coaching, standards, and career growth. We want our AMs leading larger and more complex accounts over time, and this role is how that happens. This job scales through the team, getting stronger, and the best day in it is watching an AM run a review you used to have to run yourself.
The senior relationships. For our largest and most complex clients, you are the person their leadership calls, as the owner of the relationship rather than the escalation path of last resort. You lead the strategic conversations and the quarterly reviews that matter, and you know when to bring our leadership team in because there is an opportunity worth pursuing.
The systems. How client services run day to day, including whether projects land on time and on budget. You own resourcing across the AM team, so the right people are on the right work, and nobody is buried, scope discipline so change requests get resolved before they become budget problems, onboarding and the handoff from sales, and the reporting standard across every account. These decide whether good client work happens once or every time.
Client reporting is a particular focus for us, and we want someone genuinely energized by performance data and what it reveals about a client's business.
What success looks like
Clients renew because the work and the relationship are both strong. Accounts grow because you understand the client's business well enough to bring them the next best idea first. Our account managers take on more each quarter and do it well, because you invested in them. And client services run with a consistency that clients feel and the team can rely on.
What we are looking for
- Proven experience leading complex, high-revenue accounts as the senior person in the room
- Experience developing other account people, whether or not they reported to you on paper
- 5+ years in account service and strategy, in an agency or a senior in-house marketing role
- Comfort operating at a senior leadership level and contributing to company-level decisions
- Experience running resourcing and capacity across a team, and a plan for when the work and the hours don't match
- Able to hold a strategy conversation credibly: read a performance report, know which lever to pull, push back on delivery when a plan isn't working, and put results in a client's business terms
- A view of client reporting that tells the story whether results are up or down
- Hands-on with HubSpot or comparable CRM, and with project management tooling
- Strong operational and systems thinking, with sound judgment about when to act and when to coach
- Oriented toward revenue outcomes, not just delivery quality
You don't have to build the marketing strategy. You do have to hold your own in a conversation about it.
Compensation and location
