Senior Manager - Database Platform
Job Description
We're looking for a Senior Manager to lead our client's Database Platform team. You'll head a multinational team spanning Tokyo, North America, Paris, and Bengaluru, owning the full database product lifecycle — from strategy and design through integration, development, operations, and incident response. You'll drive the evolution of their database platform, optimize a range of database solutions, and establish a de facto standard for database operations, all while proactively managing vendor relationships and contributing to open-source communities to keep customer satisfaction high.
Responsibilities
- Define and continually refine our multi-cloud OLTP database strategy, working closely with CxOs, application teams, and OLAP (analytics) teams
- Lead and mentor a multinational team responsible for the development and stable operation of our core database platform
- Design and optimize database solutions to improve performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency across the ecosystem
- Manage large-scale database infrastructure projects, ensuring high availability and smooth integration with private cloud services
- Handle senior-level vendor communications and negotiations to optimize infrastructure performance, licensing, and support
- Drive ongoing improvements to database platform architecture to keep pace with growing, data-intensive demands
- Cultivate a culture of technical excellence centered on service quality and customer satisfaction
Mandatory Qualifications
- Background in product management, product development, and/or DevOps for cloud products — particularly private and public IaaS, PaaS, cloud orchestration, databases, data analytics, ITIL, or related technical areas
- 10+ years of experience in the cloud platform industry
- 5+ years working in cross-functional, cross-cultural teams
- Solid grasp of the cloud industry, its technologies, and DevOps practices
- Prior leadership experience managing a mid-sized organization (at least 30 people, ideally 60+) within a tech company
- 5+ years of experience as a Database Administrator (DBA)
- Strong English skills for managing cross-cultural teams and negotiating with vendors
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and resolve high-level technical/operational challenges
- Strong communication skills for coordinating with international stakeholders and vendors, from CxOs to peer engineering managers
Desired Qualifications
- Expertise across diverse database environments, including RDBMS (Oracle, MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Redis, Couchbase, Cassandra)
- Experience designing and operating large-scale database platforms in cloud or private cloud environments
