Engineering Manager, Document Management
Indexed description
The Engineering Manager, Document Management is responsible for the end-to-end delivery of document management systems and intelligent automation solutions that support our financial services customers. This role combines hands-on technical leadership with operational excellence, overseeing release management, environment operations, team delivery and cross-functional coordination to ensure the platform is built, deployed and maintained at production scale.
The role leads a team of mid and senior engineers across the full document management stack: backend services in Java and .NET, RESTful APIs and microservices, front-end integrations, cloud infrastructure on AWS and Azure, and CI/CD pipelines. It also owns the near-term roadmap for intelligent automation — AI-assisted classification, automated retention workflows and search capabilities — and is accountable for the people leadership, architecture decisions and operational rigor that keep the platform running at pace.
Responsibilities
- Manages day-to-day delivery of document management engineering initiatives, ensuring on-time, high-quality releases aligned with business objectives and roadmap commitments
- Owns document platform architecture end to end: platform selection, API design, data models, document lifecycle workflows and compliance controls
- Makes architectural decisions across the backend stack (Java, .NET) and front-end integrations (React, Angular, Node.js) — not just reviews what the team produces
- Designs and governs RESTful API and microservices architecture for document services consumed across the organization
- Sets and enforces engineering standards for cloud infrastructure on AWS and Azure: availability, scalability, security and cost
- Owns CI/CD pipeline strategy — ensures the team ships with speed and confidence, not just correctness
- Owns end-to-end release management: coordinates deployments across on-premises and AWS environments, manages change requests and enforces release quality gates
- Maintains environment health across development, staging and production tiers — provisioning, observability, alerting and incident triage
- Manages incident response: triage, root cause analysis, post-mortem documentation and corrective action tracking
- Coordinates with Operations, Infrastructure and Security teams on environment changes, deployment activities and production escalations
- Drives the near-term AI roadmap: intelligent document classification, AI-assisted search and automated retention workflows
- Guides the team in adopting best practices for AI/ML development and deployment, including LLM integration patterns and agent frameworks
- Applies secure AI development practices — prompt injection prevention, data leakage controls and responsible AI governance — with specific attention to NPI and PII handled by the document platform
- Enforces secure development practices across coding, testing, access control and deployment, with emphasis on protecting Non-Public Information (NPI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
- Ensures compliance with data privacy and security standards applicable to financial services and regulated document management environments
- Oversees front-end application development in close coordination with the UX team, ensuring responsiveness and quality
- Oversees design and creation of data models for applications and databases
- Facilitates software design meetings and analyzes user needs to determine technical requirements
- Reviews technical specifications based on conceptual design and stated business requirements
- Ensures development and execution of test protocols with emphasis on automated unit, component and scenario tests
- Establishes and tracks engineering KPIs: velocity, deployment frequency, mean time to recovery and quality metrics
- Provides technical leadership and people management to a team of software engineers, ensuring professional growth, skill development and alignment with organizational goals
- Conducts regular 1:1s, code reviews and performance assessments; manages capacity planning and hiring to support team growth and delivery commitments
- Stays current on industry standards in software engineering, document management and AI/ML operations
- Performs additional related duties as assigned
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 7+ years managing software engineering teams, with a demonstrated record of developing engineers and raising team performance
- 5+ years working in document management or a related content, records or information management domain
- Hands-on proficiency with Java and/or .NET backend development — able to review code, evaluate design decisions and identify problems without relying on the team to surface them
- Experience designing and owning RESTful APIs and microservices architecture in production environments
- Proven ability to own architectural decisions in a document management context — not just implement against a specification
- Experience deploying and operating applications on AWS or Azure, including availability, security and cost considerations
- Experience owning or governing CI/CD pipelines: tooling, standards and release quality
- Experience managing release cycles and environment operations across multiple tiers, including incident management and post-mortem processes
- Familiarity with AI/ML development and deployment — including LLM integration, agent frameworks or intelligent automation — sufficient to guide a team building these capabilities
- Experience with modern front-end technologies such as React or Angular
- Experience with source code management tools such as Azure DevOps, Git or Jira
- Experience with OpenShift container platform and developing microservices
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code
- Proficiency with development techniques such as Test-Driven Development, unit tests, component tests and scenario tests
- Experience working in a regulated financial services environment with working knowledge of compliance requirements around data privacy, access controls, audit trails and records retention
- Experience in a Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) using Agile principles
- Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing to technical and non-technical audiences at all levels, including executives, regulators and clients
- Excellent analytical, decision-making and problem-solving skills with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
